The efficacy of melengestrol acetate (MGA) to shorten the vernal transition of mares by synchronising and accelerating the first ovulation of the year after 60 days of phototherapy was determined by ultrasonographic monitoring. Sixteen mares in late transition were fed two doses of MGA (150 mg/mare/day and 100 mg/mare/day, respectively) for 10 days. A luteolytic dose of prostaglandin was administered to each mare one day after the end of MGA treatment. The presence and duration of oestrus, follicular growth, uterine oedema and presence of ovulation were monitored by ultrasonography and the cervical tone was evaluated by rectal palpation. Ovulation was detected in 87.5% of the mares treated with 150 mg MGA/mare/day for 10 days, and in 62.5% of the mares receiving 100 mg MGA/mare/day for 10 days. This was statistically different (P = 0.03) from the untreated control mares having an ovulation rate of 20%. Mares that received 150 mg MGA/day for 10 days had a mean treatment to ovulation interval of 13.1 +/- 5.97 days after the end of treatment, while mares that received 100 mg MGA/day for 10 days had a mean of 25.6 +/- 10.50 days (P = 0.01) to ovulation. These results suggest that MGA can be used for synchronising and hastening the first ovulation of the year in mares.  相似文献

Sixty-four mares (27 foaling, 37 barren or maiden), mainly Finnhorses, were subjected to treatment with 14.5 h of light and 9.5 h of darkness, starting at the beginning of December. The onset of cycling in non-foaling mares was estimated by weekly serum progesterone determinations. All of the non-foaling mares cycled in the middle of March. They started to cycle on average in the middle of February, 11.1 weeks after the beginning of the trial. There were statistically significant differences in relation to breed (Finnhorses started to cycle 2 weeks later than warm blooded, p less than 0.02) and in relation to age (brood mares with mean age 10 years, started to cycle 10 days later than those 3 years old, p less than 0.03). However, there was no statistical significant relation to previous lactation, although lactating mares lactating up to the previous autumn started to cycle 7 days later than dry mares (p less than 0.15). Artificial insemination of 14 mares in the 2nd oestrus of the year, in March, resulted in 12 foalings in the subsequent year (86%). The following winter, all pregnant mares (N = 27) were exposed to the same kind of light treatment, starting on 1st December. The 1st mare foaled at the end of January. The time from foaling to 1st post partum ovulation was significantly longer (17.0 days) in foalings taking place within 10 weeks from the beginning of the light treatment period, than in foalings occurring after more than 10 weeks of lighting (12.1 days) (p less than 0.01).  相似文献

Persistent purulent endometritis in a mare was attributed to an unclassified species of Corynebacterium. Following intrauterine infusions of 20% betadine for 5 days the purulent vulval discharge ceased and the mare appeared clinically normal. Based on histological examination of endometrial biopsy samples, the severe acute inflammatory reaction had largely resolved 2 days after therapy. Three maiden mares considered resistant to bacterial endometritis received single intrauterine inoculations of 1.8 X 10(9) colony-forming units of the Corynebacterium species. The uterine response was followed by vaginal speculum examinations, uterine cultures and cytology, and endometrial histology. After an acute inflammatory reaction, each mare had recovered completely within 2 weeks. Most rapid recovery occurred in the mare in estrus at the time of inoculation. Subsequent secondary infections were detected in two mares. The uncertainty of correlations between results obtained by various diagnostic techniques emphasized the problems associated with each. This report illustrates the concept that endometritis in individual mares may relate more to as yet unidentified "mare factors" controlling uterine defense than to primary invasion by bacteria.  相似文献

Estradiol and progesterone concentrations were evaluated from diestrous embryo transfer recipient mares (5 to 14 days post-ovulation) which were treated with an exogenous hormone regimen. Upon detection of the donor mare's ovulation (0 hours), 10 mg PGF was given to the recipient mare; at 12, 24 and 36 hours 20 mg estradiol cypionate; at 48 hours, 500 mg progesterone in oil and then 22 mg altrenogest at 60, 72 and 96 hours. Altrenogest (22 mg/day) was continued until end of the trial (detection of a fetal heart beat). Embryos were transferred non-surgically 6 or 7 days after the start of treatment.Plasma samples were evaluated over three periods; period 1-between recipient mare ovulation and prior to PGF period 2-between PGF and embryo transfer and period 3-post-transfer. During periods 2 and 3, estradiol was higher (P<.05) for mares which were 10 to 14 days post-ovulation (late diestrous) as compared to mares which were 5 to 9 days post ovulation (mid-diestrous) when treatment began. Progesterone concentrations were higher (P<.05) for the mid-diestrous mares in the same periods. The pregnancy rate was higher for the late diestrous mares than the mid-diestrous mares (58% (7/12) vs 10% (1/10)). However, no difference (P>.05) was detected in estradiol or progesterone in the late diestrous mares which were pregnant or open. During period 2, estradiol was higher (P<.05) in the pregnant than open mares. Whereas, during period 3, progesterone was higher (P<.05) in the open mares.These data suggest that estradiol is important for the establishment of pregnancy in the mare. Furthermore, hormone treatment developed in this study appears to have some potential in synchronization of diestrus mares to be used as embryo recipients.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation of pregnant and lactating mares with concentrated dried live yeast culture on the nutrient content and rate of production of milk during early lactation and on the growth of their nursing foals. Pregnant mares were fed the same diets, with or without 20 g/day of yeast culture, from 4 weeks before foaling through the eighth week of lactation. Milk production at the onset of lactation, as measured by the weigh-suckle-weigh technique, was significantly stimulated by yeast culture supplementation, although the effect was only temporary. However, the nutrient composition of mares milk was altered by continued yeast culture supplementation through at least the eighth week of lactation. Gross energy (kcal/100 g milk), sugar, fat, protein and total amino acid contents (g/100 g milk) were significantly increased. The concentrations of a number of individual amino acids tended to be greater in the milk of supplemented mares, but most of these individual differences were not statistically significant. The intakes of energy (Mcal/day), sugars, fat, protein, total amino acids, leucine, lysine, serine and valine (g/day) were significantly greater by the foals nursing supplemented mares through 8 weeks. The foals nursing supplemented mares exhibited significantly greater rates of gain by the fourth week of life, and faster growth at the withers after 6 weeks. The efficiency of converting mare feed to neonatal body mass was 24% greater in the foals of supplemented mares, These data indicate that supplementing mares with dietary yeast culture during early lactation resulted in more efficient and rapid growth of their nurslings.  相似文献

Short-term patterns of growth hormone (GH) secretion and factors affecting it were studied in mares and stallions. In Exp. 1, hourly blood samples were collected from three mares and three stallions in summer and winter. Although GH concentrations varied in a pulsatile manner in all horses, there was no effect of sex or season (P greater than .1) on plasma GH concentrations and no indication of a diurnal pattern of GH secretion. In Exp. 2, 10-min blood samples were drawn for 8 h from 12 mares; after 6 h, porcine GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) was administered i.v. at 0, 45, 90, or 180 micrograms/mare (three mares per dose). Pulsatile secretion of GH occurred in all mares and averaged 2.4 +/- .3 peaks/6 h; amplitudes were variable and ranged from 2.6 to 74.4 ng/mL. Eight of nine mares responded within 20 min to GHRH injection, but there was no difference (P greater than .1) among the three doses tested. In Exp. 3, plasma GH concentrations in stallions increased (P less than .05) 8- to 10-fold after 5 min of acute physical exercise or exposure to an estrual mare. Restraint via a twitch (5 min) and epinephrine administration (3 mg i.v.) also increased (P less than .05) plasma GH concentrations by approximately fourfold. In Exp. 4 and 5, administration of either .4, 2, or 10 mg of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) or 100 or 500 mg of sulpiride (a dopamine receptor antagonist) increased (P less than .01) plasma prolactin concentrations but had no effect (P greater than .1) on GH concentrations during the same period of time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Unsolicited reports of estrous behavior in mares thought to be pregnant were received from owners or caretakers of Arabian mares. Estrous behavior was confirmed and mares were examined for pregnancy. Gender of the conceptus was determined at foaling in 11 mares in which estrous behavior was confirmed while an apparently viable, ultrasonically normal-appearing conceptus was present. In 9 mares in which the day of ovulation was known (Day 0), the estrous behavior occurred on Day 12, 13 or 14 (5 mares), Day 18 or 20 (2 mares), Day 40 (1 mare) and Day 60 (1 mare). In another study, 55 pony mares were observed for estrous behavior every 3 days for 20 minutes during Days 11 to 40. Estrous behavior was observed in 1 mare (2%) on Day 24. Combined for the 2 studies, the incidence of a female conceptus (12/12) was greater (P<0.01) than the incidence of a male conceptus (0/12) in mares that exhibited estrous behavior.  相似文献

Two experiments studied the effects of pretreatment with estradiol benzoate before treatment with a dopamine antagonist on prolactin secretion and reproductive traits in mares during (1) the seasonal anovulatory period and (2) the normal breeding season. Experiment 1 was performed in winter with 17 mares selected for low follicular activity. Nine mares received estradiol benzoate injections every other day for a total of 10 injections; 8 mares received similar injections of vehicle. Ten days after onset of injections, all mares were placed on daily injections of sulpiride (250 mg) for 35 days or until ovulation. Plasma prolactin concentrations were higher (P < .001) in mares receiving estradiol than in controls for all assessments from days 12 through 36. Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were also increased (P < .05) by estradiol treatment from days 14 to 23. Mean day of first ovulation was 73.6 for control mares and 29.0 for estradiol-treated mares (P = .016). Estradiol treatment greatly enhanced prolactin secretion in response to sulpiride and increased LH secretion in seasonally anovulatory mares, which together hastened the date of first ovulation by an average of 45 days. Experiment 2 was designed to assess the efficacy of a long-acting, single-injection microparticle preparation of another dopamine antagonist, domperidone, for increasing prolactin secretion in cyclic mares in the summer. The experimental design and procedures used in experiment 1 were repeated, except that a single 3-g domperidone-microparticle injection was administered on day 11 rather than 45 days of sulpiride injections. Day 0 was the first day of estrus for each mare. Prolactin concentrations were higher (P < .05) in mares receiving estradiol than in control mares from days 12 through 25 and after a thyrotropin-releasing hormone injection on d 21. Estrous cycle traits (time to ovulation and time of luteal regression) were not affected (P > .1) by treatment. Estradiol enhanced the prolactin response to a single injection of 3 g domperidone in cyclic mares in the summer in a manner similar to the estradiol enhancement of prolactin secretion in response to daily sulpiride injections in anovulatory mares in winter. Thus, the single injection of domperidone could possibly replace the daily sulpiride injections used in experiment 1 to induce ovulation in seasonally anovulatory mares; this needs to be tested in future experiments.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of flow cytometric sorting and freezing on stallion sperm fertility. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used to delineate effects of flow sorting and freezing spermatozoa. Oestrus was synchronised (July-August) in 41 mares by administering 10 ml altrenogest (2.2 mg/ml) per os for 10 consecutive days, followed by 250 microg cloprostenol i.m. on Day 11. Ovulation was induced by administering 3,000 iu hCG i.v. either 6 h (fresh spermatozoa) or 30 h (frozen/thawed spermatozoa) prior to insemination. Mares were assigned randomly to one of 4 sperm treatment groups. Semen was collected from 2 stallions with an artificial vagina and processed for each treatment. Treatment 1 (n = 10 mare cycles) consisted of fresh, nonsorted spermatozoa and Treatment 2 (n = 16 mare cycles) of fresh, flow sorted spermatozoa. Spermatozoa to be sorted were stained with Hoechst 33342 and sorted into X- and Y-chromosome-bearing populations based on DNA content using an SX MoFlo sperm sorter. Treatment 3 (n = 16 mare cycles) consisted of frozen/thawed nonsorted spermatozoa (frozen at 33.5 x 106 sperm/ml in 0.25 ml straws) and Treatment 4 (n = 15 mare cycles) of flow sorted frozen/thawed spermatozoa (frozen at 64.4 x 10(6) sperm/ml). Concentrations of sperm in both cryopreserved treatments were adjusted, based on predetermined average post-thaw motilities, so that each insemination contained approximately 5 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa. Hysteroscopic insemination of 5 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa in a volume of 230 microd was used for all treatments. Pregnancy was determined ultrasonographically 16 days postovulation. No differences were found (P>0.1) in the pregnancy rates for mares inseminated with fresh nonsorted (4/10 = 40.0%), fresh flow sorted (6/16 = 37.5%), frozen/thawed nonsorted (6/16 = 37.5%) and flow sorted frozen/thawed spermatozoa (2/15 = 133%). Pregnancy rates tended (P = 0.12) to be lower following insemination of frozen/thawed flow sorted spermatozoa. Further studies are needed with a larger number of mares to determine if fertility of flow sorted frozen/thawed spermatozoa can be improved.  相似文献

Deslorelin acetate (Ovuplant™, Fort Dodge), a GnRH agonist, is commonly used to induce ovulation in cycling mares. Although its efficacy in hastening ovulation has been previously reported, the effects of age of mare and month of administration on percent of mares responding and interval to ovulation have not been studied.Data was gathered from reproduction records of 376 mares receiving deslorelin acetate at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory, Colorado State University, from 1995 to 1999. Age of mare, date of administration, size of largest follicle at treatment, and interval to ovulation were recorded. Age of mare was categorized into five groups: 2–4, 5–9, 10–14, 15–19, and greater than or equal to 20 years. Date of administration was divided into four groups: March and April, May and June, July and August, and September and October.A higher (p < 0.05) percentage of mares aged 10–14 (98.5%) ovulated in response to deslorelin acetate than mares aged 2–4 or 5–9 (90.2% or 91.0%, respectively) or mares aged 15–19 or ≥ 20 (87.9% or 83.8%, respectively). Mares ≥ 20 had the lowest ovulation rate (83.8%). However, mares ≥ 20 that responded to deslorelin acetate had a shorter (p < 0.05) interval from treatment to ovulation (1.7 ± 0.1 days) than mares 2–4 and 5–9 years of age (1.9 ± 0.1 and 1.9 ± 0.0 days, respectively).Deslorelin acetate was more effective in inducing ovulation in the July and August (95.4%) (p < 0.01) and September and October (95.7%) (p = 0. 04) than in the March and April (81.1%). Mares treated in May through October also experienced shorter (p < 0.05) intervals to ovulation than mares treated in March and April.  相似文献

Horse owners want to have their mares bred as early as possible in the breeding season after February 1. Numerous medical treatments, such as progesterone, dopamine antagonists, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone have been administered to anestrous or transitional mares in an attempt to induce follicular development. Some of these treatments are ineffective or impractical, so there is a need in the horse industry to develop alternative techniques to stimulate follicular development and ovulation early in the breeding season. Twenty transitional mares were assigned to one of two treatment groups. Mares in group 1 (n = 10) served as untreated controls, and mares in group 2 (n = 10) were administered 12.5 mg of purified equine follicle-stimulating hormone (eFSH) (Bioniche Animal Health USA, Inc., Athens, Ga) intramuscularly twice daily for a maximum of 15 consecutive days. Mares were considered to be in transition when the diameter of the largest follicle was ≥25 mm. Once one or more follicles >35 mm were detected, eFSH treatment was discontinued and human chorionic gonadotropin was administered intravenously. The percentage of mares ovulating during the 15-day observation period was compared by means of chi-square analysis. The interval to ovulation and the number of ovulations per mare were compared between the two groups by Student t test. In 8 of 10 mares treated with eFSH follicles developed and ovulation occurred during the 15-day observation period, compared with 0 of 10 control mares. Interval from onset of treatment to ovulation was 7.6 ± 2.4 days for these eight mares. The eight mares were treated for an average of 5.2 ± 1.3 days with eFSH. Thus, the eFSH treatment was effective in advancing the first ovulation of the year in transitional mares.  相似文献

Six mares had ovariohysterectomy performed for chronic pyometra associated with cervical abnormalities, uterine neoplasia, or removal of a macerated fetus. Ovariohysterectomy was performed through a ventral midline incision with access to the ovarian and uterine vessels aided by traction on the uterus and retraction of abdominal viscera. Abdominal pain, the most common complication after surgery, occurred in four mares but resolved within 36 hours. Peritonitis occurred in two mares; one mare was subsequently euthanatized. Other complications that resolved with treatment included infection of the uterine stump (two mares), abdominal hemorrhage (one mare), diarrhea (one mare), and incisional infection (one mare). Complications after surgery can be reduced by removing as much of the uterus as possible, minimizing peritoneal contamination with uterine contents, and providing a secure closure of the caudal reproductive tract.  相似文献

In its first year of commercial availability in the United States, reports from the field indicated that Ovuplant™ (a deslorelin-containing slow-release implant for hastening ovulation in mares) was associated with a delayed return to estrus in mares not becoming pregnant. Supposedly this effect was particularly prevalent in mares subsequently administered PGF to cause luteal regression after embryo collection. The present experiment was conducted 1) to determine if the field observations were repeatable under controlled experimental conditions, and 2) to gather endocrine data that might yield information on the underlying cause(s) of this observation. Twenty-five light horse mares were used. Ovaries of each mare were examined by transrectal ultrasonography daily during estrus until ovulation. Once a follicle >30 mm was detected, the mare received either Ovuplant (treated group; N = 13) at the recommended dosage or a sham injection (controls; N = 12); treatments were administered in a manner to ensure that they were unknown to personnel involved with data collection. On day 7 after ovulation, each mare received a luteolytic injection of PGF. Mares were examined every other day until return to estrus or development of a 30 mm follicle, at which time daily examination was performed until ovulation. Jugular blood samples were collected daily. Two mares receiving Ovuplant did not return to estrus within 30 days and their data were not included in the statistical analyses; in contrast, no control mare exhibited such an extended interovulatory interval. For all other mares receiving Ovuplant, the interval between the first and second ovulations was longer (P = .0001) than that of control mares by an average of 6.2 days. In addition, plasma LH concentrations were lower (P <.05) in the treated mares on days 0 through 4, 9, 11, 18, and 19 after the first ovulation. Plasma FSH concentrations were also lower (P = .017) in treated mares from days 4 to 11 and on days 6 and 5 prior to the second ovulation (P = .005). Differences in progesterone and estradiol were observed but were less consistent than for LH and FSH. Mares receiving Ovuplant had fewer small (P =.026), medium (P = .003) and large (P = .045) follicles prior to the second ovulation. In conclusion, Ovuplant treatment at the recommended dosage decreased follicular activity after ovulation and increased the interovulatory interval in mares short-cycled with PGF. These effects appear to be mediated by a hyposecretion of LH and(or) FSH.  相似文献

Low-dose insemination has been proposed to reduce persistent breeding-induced endometritis (PBIE) in mares with delayed uterine clearance (DUC). Others proposed that hysteroscopic insemination induces an exaggerated inflammatory response and should be avoided in DUC mares. The objectives here were to evaluate presence and severity of PBIE in normal and DUC mares after hysteroscopic insemination with fresh semen, and to determine if hysteroscopy could be used in DUC mares without inducing excessive inflammation. Reproductively normal (n = 4) and DUC (n = 5) mares received four treatments in random order: uterine body insemination (UB, 1 × 10(9) spermatozoa, 20 ml), hysteroscopic insemination (HYST, 5 × 10(6) spermatozoa, 0.5 ml), sham hysteroscopic insemination (SHAM, semen extender, 0.5 ml) and hysteroscopic infusion of seminal plasma (SP, 0.5 ml). Significantly more DUC (50%) mares than normal (14%) mares accumulated intrauterine fluid 24 h post-treatment. The difference in fluid accumulation between DUC (40%) mares and normal (7%) mares was also significant 48 h post-treatment. Fluid scores were not significantly different between treatments in normal mares. However, treatments HYST and SHAM resulted in significantly higher fluid scores 24 h but not 48 h post-treatment in DUC mares. There was no effect of treatment or mare group on the percentage and total number of neutrophils in uterine fluid 48 h post-treatment. Percentage of neutrophils was correlated with duration of hysteroscopy in normal mares, with procedures lasting ≥ 9 min associated with PBIE. There was no effect of mare group, treatment or duration of hysteroscopy on pregnancy rate. Hysteroscopy induces a transient inflammation that is not more severe than that after conventional artificial insemination, suggesting no contraindication to its use in DUC mares.  相似文献

Previous research from our laboratory showed that approximately one third of obese, nonfoaling mares displayed a condition of hyperleptinemia coupled with hyperinsulinemia that resembled type 2 diabetes in humans. The current study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of the hyperleptinemic syndrome in lactating mares and its possible impact on their rebreeding success. Additionally, we investigated possible relationships between leptin levels in lactating versus nonlactating mares. In experiment 1, jugular blood samples were collected from 198 lactating mares on two occasions approximately 2 weeks apart. The mares resided on eight farms in Louisiana; breeds included Thoroughbred (n = 86), Quarter Horse (n = 71), Warmblood (n = 24), and draft-type (n = 17). Body condition scores (BCS) were measured at the time of blood sampling; plasma samples were assessed for leptin and progesterone concentrations. Reproductive and medical histories, as well as feeding regimens, were compiled on each mare. Based on our previous reports and examination of the current data, a mare was considered hyperleptinemic if her plasma samples contained greater than10 ng/mL leptin; normal was considered 6.0 ng/mL or less; mares with levels above 6.0 and 10 ng/mL or greater were classified as intermediate. Overall mean leptin concentration was 4.7 ng/mL, and average BCS was 5.5. After analysis, 24 mares were classified as hyperleptinemic (12%), 138 were classified as normal (70%), and 36 were classified as intermediate (18%). Leptin concentrations were affected by BCS (P = .08), with higher concentrations in mares with higher body condition; however, there were hyperleptinemic mares with BCS of 4 to 5.5. Feeding regimen affected leptin concentrations (P < .01), with mares on pasture full-time having the highest concentrations. There was no effect of breed, mare age, number of years the mare had been bred, number of live foals, progesterone concentrations, or last foaling date on leptin concentrations. Rebreeding success averaged 81% overall and was not affected by leptin classification. In experiment 2, nonfoaling mares kept on pasture had mean leptin concentrations of 7.0 ng/mL; 8 of 31 mares (26%) displayed hyperleptinemia. Mean leptin concentration was correlated with BCS (R2 = 0.65; P < .02) but was not affected by age of the mare. It was concluded that the hyperleptinemic condition occurs in lactating broodmares, even at BCS as low as 4. The overall incidence appears to be lower in broodmares than in nonfoaling mares, likely because of their lower BCS in general and the energy demands of lactation. Hyperleptinemia did not affect rebreeding success at the end of the breeding season.  相似文献

Actinobacillus equuli is carried in the alimentary tract of mares and can cause severe septicemia of neonatal foals. A hemolytic subspecies, A. equuli subsp. haemolyticus, and a non-hemolytic subspecies, A. equuli subsp. equuli, have been identified. Hemolytic strains produce the RTX toxin Aqx. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate sequentially in two sets of mare-foal pairs antibodies to A. equuli whole bacterial cells, outer membrane proteins, and recombinant Aqx and to compare the transfer of antibodies to these antigens between mares and their foals. Two mare/foal sets of sera were evaluated. Cohort A consisted of 18 mare-foal pairs obtained in the spring of 2005. Cohort B consisted of 10 mare-foal pairs obtained in the spring of 2006. For both sets, mare and foal sera were obtained immediately after foaling and prior to nursing (time 0) as well as at 12 and 24h and daily thereafter for 7 days. For Cohort B, sera were also obtained 30 days after birth. At parturition all mares had detectable antibodies to A. equuli whole cells and outer membranes; however, of those mares, two in Cohort A had undetectable antibodies to Aqx and their foals likewise had undetectable anti-Aqx antibodies. Antibodies against whole cells, outer membrane proteins, and Aqx were readily transferred from mares to foals. In most cases, there were significant correlations (p<0.05) between antibodies against whole cells, outer membrane proteins, and Aqx in mares' sera at the time of parturition and foal sera 24 after birth. Antibodies against the three antigen preparations had declined insignificantly (p>0.05) by day 30.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical applications and limitations of daily low-dose oxytocin injections for the induction of parturition in pregnant at term mares, the attention was focussed on the efficacy of the treatment and on its possible negative effects on mare and foal. Three-hundred and fifty pregnant full term Standardbred mares were used: 176 were allowed to foal spontaneously, 174 were treated daily with 3.5 IU of oxytocin i.m. when mammary secretion showed a calcium concentration ≥ 200 ppm. For each mare, gestational length, outcome and duration of foaling, placenta expulsion time were recorded. Physical and behavioural characteristics of each foal were also recorded. Administration of oxytocin resulted in the delivery of a normal foal within 120 min in 68.9% of treated mares: 51.3% responded to the first oxytocin administration, 14.2% to the second and 3.4% to the third. No significant difference between treated and control mares was observed in the gestational length (340 ± 8 days vs 337 ± 7 days), duration of foaling (10 ± 5.6 min vs 11 ± 4.9 min), incidence of dystocia (1.4% vs 1.7%) and failure of rupture of the allantochorion (0% vs 0.6%). No significant difference was observed in the incidence of placental retention between treated and control groups (8.1% vs 6.3%). Physical and behavioural characteristics were normal in foals of both groups. In conclusion, daily injections of low doses of oxytocin in at term mares showed only moderate efficacy for inducing parturition. However, the easy applicability and the complete safety for both mare and foal, of this method of foaling induction makes it a useful tool to simplify the management of mares in commercial stud farms.  相似文献

Pregnancy and lactation are periods of significant influence on bone metabolism that has not been investigated in equines. To examine the influence of late pregnancy and lactation on bone metabolism in mares, the changes in the blood serum/plasma total calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphates (Pi), pyridinoline (Pyd) and 17β-estradiol (E2) concentration and the bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) activity were investigated. The samples were taken from 11 mares on 60 ± 10 and 20 ± 10 days before foaling, and 20 ± 10 and 60 ± 10 days after foaling. The concentration/activity of Ca, Pi, Pyd and BAP increased significantly in early lactation, but the Pyd than decreased in the 4th period. A significant correlation was observed between the E2 and bone metabolism parameters. The results indicate low maintenance of normocalcaemia with reduced bone synthesis in late pregnancy and prove the role of estradiol in bone metabolism in mares during pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of an orally administered ivermectin and praziquantel paste with regard to variables associated with clinical findings, parturition, lactation, maternal care, and neonate viability in pregnant mares. ANIMALS: 40 pregnant mares. PROCEDURE: Mares were randomly allocated into treatment (n = 20) and control (20) groups and administered a placebo or 3 times the therapeutic dosage of ivermectin (0.6 mg/kg) and praziquantel (4.5 mg/kg) at 14-day intervals until parturition. Physical examinations were performed on mares and their foals after parturition (on postpartum days 30, 60, and 90) to identify any drug-related effects. As an aid in assessing general health, hematologic and serum biochemical analyses were performed monthly on the mares. RESULTS: In blood constituents, minor alterations that were not biologically important were observed. Reproductive performance was not affected by the unusual treatment duration or high dosage, although the drugs were administered during a crucial period of equine embryonic development (30 to 60 days). Neither adverse effects on mares nor abortions occurred. Follow-up evaluations of the foals for a 3-month period did not detect any abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Administration of the ivermectin-praziquantel paste appears to be safe in pregnant mares and their foals.  相似文献

Changes in mare mammary secretion composition were characterized prior to and after foaling. Eighteen mares were used for collection of mammary secretions from 23 days prepartum through 44 days postpartum. Concentrations of lactose, total protein, IgG and lysozyme (activity assay) were determined. Considerable variabilty was observed among mares. Mean lactose concentrations by mare were lower (P<.05) in the prepartum period compared with the postpartum period. Mean total protein and immunoglobulin G concentrations by mare were higher (P<.05) in the prepartum period compared with the postpartum period. Mean lysozyme activities by mare tended to be lower (P<.08) during the prepartum period compared with the postpartum period. Mammary secretion protein profiles, characterized by SDS-PAGE, were consistent with changes in concentrations of specific proteins measured in the secretions. Dynamic changes occurring in mammary secretions during the transition from prepartum accumulation of colostrum to postpartum production of milk include factors like IgG and lysozyme which have protective roles in the neonatal foal.  相似文献
