Summary The potential to improve seed germination responses to salinity was evaluated for 13 accessions representing six wild Lycopersicon species and 20 accessions of L. esculentum. Germination response times increased in all accessions at 100 mM NaCl. Analysis indicated that one accession of L. peruvianum (PI126435) germinated faster under high salinity than all other accessions and was closely followed by L. pennellii (LA716). The fastest germinating L. esculentum accession, PI174263, ranked third. Additional wild ecotypes exhibiting rapid germination at 100 mM NaCl were identified among L. pimpinellifolium and L. peruvianum.  相似文献

Over 540 accessions of wild Lycopersicon species or their crosses with L. esculentum were screened for resistance in a series of trials. Forty-six accessions were selected for the final screening trial based on lower disease ratings in previous trials. Of these, L. hirsutum had the greatest number of resistant accessions, followed by L. esculentum and L. peruvianum. Twenty accessions were quantified for their levels of resistance based on leaf area infected, area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), and the degree of sporulation. There was a significant positive correlation between the AUDPC calculated from 20 accessions evaluated under growth room and field conditions. Five L. hirsutum accessions had no sporulation associated with leaf lesions, whereas L. esculentum accessions had an average of 1.6×104 conidia/cm2 of leaf tissue. There was significant positive correlation between the AUDPC values and the number of conidia per cm2 of leaf tissue.  相似文献

Summary In studies to determine the inheritance of response-time traits, such as time to seed germination, some viable individuals may fail to respond during an experiment. If these right-censored observations are ignored, sample means and variances will be underestimated. This is illustrated using data from time to seed germination at 9°C for Lycopersicon esculentum (Mill.) fast germinating PI 120256, slow-germinating T3 and their reciprocal F1, F2 and backcross progeny. This paper presents methods to detect and to accommodate right-censored data in generation means analysis. Genetic interpretations derived from corrected and uncorrected estimates of generation means and variances are compared. Correction for right-censoring increased estimates of environmental and phenotypic variances, and decreased heritability estimates.  相似文献

Summary Treatment of Lycopersicon peruvianum stigmas with an artificial medium analogous to stigmatic exudate allowed pollen germination and growth on immature pistils. Growth of Lycopersicon esculentum pollen tubes to L. peruvianum ovules, an otherwise incompatible cross, was achieved following such treated bud-pollinations. No plantlets were recovered, although a few embryos from this cross at the globularity heart stage of development were excised at 22 days after pollination, indicating the presence of crossing failures as severe as in the reciprocal cross. Hybrid plants were obtained from the reciprocal cross, using as pollen parent an L. peruvianum line selected for congruity with L. esculentum. Bud pollinations to L. peruvianum, using these interspecific F1 hybrids as the pollen parent, allowed viable embryo development and plantlet recovery. Resulting backcross plants, which possess approximately 1/4 L. esculentum genome in a L. peruvianum cytoplasm, may facilitate further introgression of the L. esculentum nuclear genes into in foreign cytoplasm.  相似文献

Accessions of Lycopersicon peruvianum complex and their F1progenies were screened for genotype specific resistance to Mi-1-avirulent M. incognita and M. javanica biotypes at25 °C and at 32 °C (a temperature at which Mi-1resistance is not expressed), and to Mi-1-virulent M.incognita at 25 °C. All entries of the L. peruvianumChotano-humifusum race accessions LA2157 and LA2334 were resistantto Mi-1-avirulent biotype at 25 °C and at 32 °C,indicating that the accessions are homozygous for the heat-stableresistance. The L. peruvianum Maranon race accessions LA1626,LA1708, LA2172, LA2185, LA2326 and LA2328 segregated for heat-stableresistance to Mi-1-avirulent biotype. The F1 progeny tested ofLA392 × LA2157, LA2334 × LA2157, LA2328 × LA2326,LA2328 × LA2185, LA1708 × LA2328 andLA1626 × LA2172 were resistant to Mi-1-avirulent biotype at32 °C. There were differences in the segregating accessions andF1 hybrids for expression of heat-unstable and heat-stable resistanceto Mi-1-avirulent Meloidogyne spp. The L. peruvianumLA392 and LA2163 and L. chilense LA1968, LA1972, LA2404, LA2405,LA2406, LA2748, LA2930, and the L. peruvianum × L.chilense hybrids were homozygous susceptible with all entries testedsusceptible at 32 °C. Cuttings of these L. peruvianumaccessions and their F1 progenies were susceptible to Mi-1-virulent M. incognita biotype at 25 °C.  相似文献

Since the late 1980s powdery mildew, designated Oidium lycopersicum, frequently invaded the tomato crop in Western Europe. All commercial cultivars are susceptible. To screen for resistance in wild species a reliable and efficient disease test was developed. Young plants with two to three true leaves are inoculated at high relative humidity by spraying with a freshly prepared suspension of 2×104 conidia, ml–1. Symptoms are periodically evaluated according to a scale based on the percentage of leaf area with mycelium. One hundred and twenty seven accessions, representing eight wild Lycopersicon species, were screened for resistance to O. lycopersicum. A large variation in resistance was found between species. L. hirsutum was the most resistant species; L. pennellii was moderately resistant; species of the subgeneric group of L. esculentum and of the peruvianum-complex were all susceptible. L. parviflorum was classified separately due to a large variation between accessions. Except for this species, a low variation was found between accessions within species. High levels of resistance were observed in four accessions of L. hirsutum, in one of L. parviflorum and in one of L. peruvianum. This resistance is characterized by a very low disease incidence and a strongly restricted mycelium growth and lack of sporulation.  相似文献

Summary 1201 tomato cultivars, breeding lines and accessions of Lycopersicon species were screened for tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV) under field and laboratory conditions during summer seasons of 1986 to 1989. Two lines of L. hirsutum (PI 390658 and PI 390659) and 2 lines of L. peruvianum (PI 127830 and PI 127831) were resistant to TLCV infection. These accessions did not produce any leaf curl symptoms either in field or after inoculation by whitefly Bemisia tabaci with TLCV. Adult whiteflies died within 3 days after releasing on resistant accessions (PI 390658, PI 390659, PI 127830), whereas the whiteflies survived upto 25 days on susceptible tomato cultivars. Under field conditions 0–4 and 5–25 adult whiteflies were observed on resistant and susceptible cultivars respectively. Hybridization was effected using the popular tomato cultivars Arka Sourabh, and Arka Vikas, as the female parents and the resistant Lycopersicon wild species as the pollen parents, to incorporate the resistant gene(s) into the edible tomatoes.  相似文献

Summary Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was obtained from infected tomatoes in commercial fields in Arkansas in 1985. A greenhouse screening procedure for identifying tomatoes resistant to TSWV was established using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect infected plants. Symptom expression was variable and symptom expression was not reliable for identifying infected plants. Germplasm evaluated for resistance to one typical Arkansas isolate (85–9) of TSWV included: twenty cultivars and breeding lines of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, 52 accessions of L. pimpinellifolium (Jusl.) Mill and 8 accessions of L. peruvianum (L.) Mill. All cultivated accessions and breeding lines evaluated were susceptible. Some individual plants in several accessions of L. pimpinellifolium were resistant and nearly all plants of the L. peruvianum accessions that were evaluated were resistant to isolate 85–9.Dept. of Plant Pathology  相似文献

Summary Growth analyses were carried out on 88 accessions of five Lycopersicon species. Experiments were conducted in a climate room at 19/14° C day/night temperature which was irradiated at 20 W/m2 for eight hours per day. Large differences in plant weights between wild species and the cultivated tomato were observed from 44 to 84 days after sowing. The increase in plant dry weight could be described by a second order polynomial function. When compared at a standardized plant weight of one gram, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the wild and cultivated accessions ranged from 5.3 to 11.8% and 8.5 to 12.2% per day respectively, limiting the use of wild species as sources for strong growth. When expressed at plant weights of one and three g large differences in decrease of the RGR were observed within L. esculentum. The modern hybrid tomato cultivars were among the fastest growing genotypes, with a relatively slow decrease in RGR.  相似文献

Summary Eleven populations of Brassica napus L. and twelve populations of B. campestris L. were subjected to three cycles of selection for fast germination at 2°C and at 25°C. The seeds from the selected populations, and unselected control populations grown in the same environment as the selected populations, were examined for germination behaviour at 2°C and 25°C, and for growth behaviour at 10°C. The populations in both species responded differently in terms of germination behaviour to selection for fast germination. In most of the populations that did respond positively to selection, selection practised at 2°C was superior to selection at 25°C in improving percent germination at 2°C, and was as good as the selection at 25°C in improving germination rate at the higher temperature. Selection for fast germination had no effect on growth characteristics of B. napus and B. campestris populations grown at 10°C. Thus, selection for fast germination at one low temperature may lead to improvement in germination characteristics over a range of temperatures, but will not necessarily lead to improved growth performance of the selected populations.  相似文献

Haploid selection for traits related to pollen cold tolerance in tomato was performed in segregating populations derived from a Lycopersicon esculentum × L. pennellii hybrid. BC1 populations were obtained by combining normal and low temperature treatments on two stages of pollen development: pollen formation, and germination and pollen tube growth. F1 hybrids were cultivated under low and normal temperatures and their pollen was used to pollinate L. esculentum plants at low and normal temperatures. The four BC1 populations obtained were tested for the quality and quantity of pollen produced at low temperatures. The population obtained by cold treatment at both stages had a significantly improved pollen germination ability at low temperatures. The two other coldselected BC1 populations showed no differences compared with the unselected BC population. A second cycle of pollen selection, corresponding to BC2, was applied in order to test its persistence in the subsequent generations and the possibility to further improve the character. This second cycle showed no improvement although some plants retained the high pollen germination ability at low temperatures that was observed in the first cycle. Hence, gametophytic selection of some characters related with tomato pollen performance may be feasible, at least for the first cycle of selection.  相似文献

Cold in the initial growth stages is an important stressfactor for maize grown in regions with a temperate climate, particularly in case of early sowing. Sources of tolerancehave been identified in adapted genotypes, but promisinggenes for cold tolerance should also be found in materialdeveloped under the lower-temperature margins of the cropdistribution. This research was conducted in order to testAndean maize accessions for cold tolerance expressed duringboth the heterotrophic and early autotrophic growth stages.Experiments were conducted in controlled environments tostudy cold tolerance traits (germination %, germinationindex and plant growth rate) at continuous 10°C (heterotrophic growth) and at varying 10–16°C (autotrophic growth). An experiment was also performed inthe field with early sowing (both heterotrophic and autotrophic growth). In each experiment, a control trialwas conducted in more favourable conditions (i.e. continuous25°C in a controlled environment or late planting inthe field) so that cold tolerance traits could also beexamined as the ratio between the stress and the controltrial. None of the accessions was superior for all coldtolerance traits. However, several Andean maize accessionsoutperformed the US Corn-belt hybrid checks for one or moretraits, both in heterotrophic and autotrophic growth. Overall, BOZM 855, PMS 636, Poblacion D, Poblacion E andBOZM 696 were the best accessions, suggesting that they canbe a promising source of genes for improving cold toleranceof adapted maize genotypes.  相似文献

For the transfer of valuable traits from wild species into the cultivated tomato, excised globular-stage embryos 13 and 15 days after pollination (DAP) were cultured in vitro. Plants were regenerated from interspecific crosses of Lycopersicon esculentum cv. ‘Early pink’×L. peruvianum PI270435, and backcrosses of L. esculentum‘Giban (JF) No. 1’× (‘Early pink’× PI270435). Somatic embryos and single cotyledons emerged on hypocotyl sections of the embryos. Five to nine plantlets per embryo were obtained by clonal propagation. The hybrid nature of the plants is confirmed by comparing hybrids and parents in their ability to regenerate shoots from leaf segments in vitro, by comparing plant morphology and characteristics and by chromosome number. This study describes an efficient ‘embryo rescue’ method, as well as somatic embryogenesis by clonal propagation. A novel and simple method for the characterization of the interspecific hybrids is also reported.  相似文献

Summary Acid phosphatase and cathodal peroxidase isozyme patterns were used to identify nine introduced and five local cultivars of common safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) and seven ecotypes of wild safflower (C. oxyacantha Bieb.). Nineteen and nine bands, respectively, were readily observed for the phosphatase and peroxidase systems in the extracts from seedling shoots. Results indicated that both systems could be used jointly for complete identification of all the 21 seed sources used.Band frequencies and polymorphic indices (PI) were determined from acid phosphatase patterns using at least 92 individual seedlings of five introduced and five local cultivars and three wild ecotypes. Band frequencies ranged from complete absence in some to total presence in other populations. The mean PI for the introduced, local and wild safflowers were found to be 0.069, 0.052 and 0.058, respectively. The banding patterns of either enzyme system were similar in some instances for the cultivated and wild safflowers and there was as much variation between two cultivars as between a cultivar and a wild ecotype, indicating close genetic relationships between C. oxyacantha and C. tinctorius.  相似文献

Summary The presence of resistance to potato cyst-eelworm in wild Lycopersicon species was confirmed. The resistance of two plant accessions, L. pimpinellifolium, B6173, and L. peruvianum, B6001, was compared in screening tests against three eelworm isolates, using the susceptible L. esculentum Ailsa Craig as a control. Both accessions were shown to possess high levels of resistance to the Wren isolate (pathotype A) of H. rostochiensis, and resistance to the Castle Donington (pathotypes A, B, and E) and Hare Lane (pathotype B) isolates. The level of resistance in L. pimpinellifolium was greater than that in L. peruvianum. Because of its greater resistance, and the ease with which it can be hybridised with tomato cultivars, L. pimpinellifolium was chosen as a donor parent for breeding programmes designed to incorporate potato cyst-eelworm resistance into a commercial tomato variety. The resistance of L. pimpinellifolium, B6173, to the Wren isolate of H. rostochiensis was shown to be controlled by a single dominant gene for which the symbol Hero is proposed.  相似文献

Seed dormancy is one of the most important parameters affecting the malting process and pre-harvest sprouting in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Variation of seed dormancy in 4365 cultivated and 177 wild barley (ssp. spontaneum) accessions derived from different regions of the world was investigated in Okayama University, Kurashiki, Japan. Seed dormancy of each accession was estimated from their germination percentages at 0, 5, 10 and 15 weeks post-harvest after-ripening periods. All of the wild barley accessions showed less than 10% germination at 0 week after-ripening period. Level of seed dormancy in 4365 cultivated barley accessions showed a clear geographical differentiation. Seventy seven percent of Ethiopian accessions showed high germination percentages, while 86% of Japanese, Turkish and North African accessions showed low germination percentages at 0 week after-ripening period. A half diallel cross using eleven barley accessions with different level of dormancy revealed that seed dormancy was predominately controlled by additive gene effects. These results suggest that large genetic diversity for seed dormancy in barley is explained as different levels of additive accumulation of genetic factors. Barley varieties showing appropriate dormancy could be developed by crossing among barley germplasm accessions used in the present study.  相似文献

The genetic basis of cold tolerance (CT) during vegetative growth in tomato was investigated by evaluating plants of a cold-tolerant primitive cultivar (PI120256) and a cold-sensitive breeding line (UCT5) and their reciprocal F1, F2, F3, BC1P1 and BC1P2 progeny under two temperature regimes of 15/10 °C (cold stress) and 25/15 °C (control). Plants were evaluated for shoot dry weight (DW) under cold stress and by a tolerance index (TI) measured as the ratio of DW under cold stress (DWs) to DW under control (DWc) conditions. Shoot DW was reduced in all genotypes in response to cold stress. However, PI120256 exhibited the highest CT (TI = 90.5%) and UCT5 the lowest (TI = 38.9%). The TIs of the filial and backcross progeny were intermediate to the parents. Across generations, there was a positive correlation (r = 0.76, p < 0.01) between DWs and DWc indicating that growth under cold stress was influenced by plant vigor. However, the absence of a significant correlation (r=0.47, p >0.05) between DWc and the TI and, in contrast, the presence of a significant correlation (r =0.92, p <0.01) between DWs and the TI suggest that plant vigor was not a determining factor in the expression of CT in PI120256 and its progeny. Generation means analyses of DWs and TI indicated that the variation among generations was genetically controlled, with additive effects accounting for most of the variation. There were no significant dominance effects, and epistatic effects were minor and involved only additive × additive interactions. The results suggest that the inherent CT of PI120256 should be useful for improving CT of commercial cultivars of tomato. This paper presents the results of a six year field study of wild Avenaspecies and their response to vernalization and photoperiod. The accessions of twenty one wild and weedy species were tested under 12-hr and 18-hr daylength and cold temperatures (for 40 days at +2 °C) treatments and without it (as a control). The results demonstrate that for the majority of species evaluated, cold temperature requirements had a greater influence on heading date and the duration of the vegetative period than daylength. Genotypes with neutral, weak and strong reactions to all treatments were found and spring and winter types were selected. The results further demonstrated that daylength-insensitive forms occurred in the south Mediterranean region and adjacent southern territories.  相似文献

Summary A brief survey is given of the occurrence of unilateral incompatibility between populations. It is reported how the unilateral incompatibility between L. peruvianum and L. esculentum has been broken stepwise by inbreeding with the aid of self-compatibility in L. peruvianum and selection in this self-compatible L. peruvianum material of absence of L. esculentum pollen tube inhibition, and how L. peruvianum material has been developed on which large-scale L. peruvianum x L. esculentum hybrid production is possible. It is concluded that the unilateral incompatibility between L. esculentum and L. peruvianum consists of a complex of separate processes.  相似文献

The Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum accession PI 127826 is recognized as a good source of resistance to arthropod pests due to the action of the allelochemical zimgiberene, a sesquiterpene present in its glandular trichomes. Five genotypes were selected from the F2 generation of the interspecific cross Lycopersicon esculentum ‘TOM-556’ × Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum ‘PI 127826’, based on their low levels (BPX-368-clone#56) or high levels(BPX-368-clone#92, BPX-368-clone#105,BPX-368-clone#179, BPX-368-clone#250) of zingiberene. The five F2 genotypes were tested for resistance to the South American tomato pinworm Tuta absolutaalong with accession L. esculentum ‘TOM-556’ (pinworm susceptible), and the accessions L. hirsutum var. hirsutum ‘PI 127826’ and L. pennellii ‘LA716’ (resistant). The F2 clones selected for high foliar zingiberene levels showed lower scores for leaflet lesion type(LLT), percent leaflets attacked (PLA) and overall plant damage (OPD) than the low zingiberene genotypes. The results indicated that zingiberene mediates resistance to the South American pinworm, based on feeding and on ovipositing deterrence, in populations derived from the interspecific cross between Lycopersicon. esculentum and Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum. Indirect selection for high foliar zingiberene content is suggested as an efficient technique for breeding tomatoes for resistance to the South American tomato pinworm. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
