1. Withdrawal of cholecalciferol (D3) supplement from a layers diet drastically reduced blood 25‐hydroxycholecalciferol (25‐OH‐D3), 1α,25‐dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol) and egg specific gravity (SG) within two weeks, followed by a decrease in blood total calcium (Ca).

2. Doubling the D3 supplement in the control diet (27.5 μg or 1100 IU/kg) almost linearly increased the circulating concentration of 25‐OH‐D3 without raising the concentration of calcitriol, Ca, or egg SG.

3. Replacing D3 by the optimal concentration of calcitriol (5 μg/kg diet) improved egg SG after 21 weeks of treatment without increasing blood calcitriol or total Ca.

4. By itself, 24,25‐dihydroxycholecalciferol [24,25‐(OH)2D3] was unable to maintain normal blood levels of calcitriol, Ca or egg SG and, when added together with calcitriol in the diet, tended to elevate blood Ca but suppress the beneficial effect of calcitriol on shell quality, with little or no effect on blood calcitriol.  相似文献

1. Studies were undertaken to determine a safe inclusion rate for crambe (Crambe abyssinica) meal in broiler chick diets, and to determine the mechanism for adverse effects by investigating its constituents; l‐cyano‐2‐hydroxy‐3‐butene (CHB) and 3‐butenyl glucosinolate (epi‐progoitrin, E‐PG).

2. Crambe meals were prepared to differ in E‐PG (19, 36 and 40 g/kg) and CHB contents (0.1, 0.7 and 1.9 g/kg), and with either active or inactive thioglucosidase.

3. Meals were fed to 7‐d‐old broiler chicks at 50 or 100 g/kg of the diet for 12 or 13 d. In separate studies, isolated E‐PG or CHB were mixed into the diet or administered by gavage to 7‐d‐old broiler chicks in amounts equivalent to 50 or 100 g/kg crambe meal diets for 10 and 12 d, respectively.

4. Weight gain decreased (P<0.05) in chicks fed on the high glucosinolate crambe diets or isolated E‐PG. Food consumption decreased (P<0.05) in chicks fed on the diet containing the high E‐PG meal with active enzyme.

5. Mild liver lesions and increased serum aspartate aminotransferase were found in chicks fed on the diet containing the high glucosinolate meal with active enzyme. Other organs, including thyroids, were normal.

6. Commercially‐processed crambe meal appeared safe at an inclusion rate of 50 or 100 g/kg diet, but could not be recommended at this point for long term feeding.  相似文献

1. Three experiments of 3 or 4 weeks’ duration were conducted with broilers fed on diets containing 60% of rice bran treated in various ways.

2. Autoclaving rice bran for 3 to 20 min significantly improved its feeding value as measured by growth rate of chicks; bran from parboiled rice was equivalent to the autoclaved rice bran and was not further improved by autoclaving.

3. The growth inhibition of rice bran is not due to its trypsin inhibitor activity.

4. Lipase activity in rice bran was destroyed by autoclaving or parboiling and may be a useful index to predict the adequacy of treatment to improve growth.

5. The metabolisable energy of the rice bran samples was about 12.55 kJ/g and was not influenced by treatment.

6. Ethoxyquin did not improve growth of chicks fed on diets containing rice bran and was less effective than autoclaving or parboiling in preventing the development of rancidity.  相似文献

Background

Steroid‐responsive meningitis‐arteritis (SRMA) is an inflammatory disease of dogs that is suspected to be immune‐mediated. The development of other immune‐mediated diseases has been linked to vaccinations, time of the year, geographic location, sex, neuter status, and breed.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To identify if the development of SRMA is associated with time of year, vaccination, geographic location, sex, neuter status, and breed.

Animals

Sixty SRMA cases and 180 controls, all ≤24 months of age and matched for year of presentation, from a referral hospital population in the United Kingdom.

Methods

Retrospective case‐control study with unconditional logistic regression analysis.

Results

Beagles (P = .001), Border Collies (P = .001), Boxers (P = .032), Jack Russell Terriers (P = .001), Weimaraners (P = .048), and Whippets (P < .001) had significantly greater odds of developing SRMA in this population of dogs. Vaccination, time of year, geographic category, sex, and neuter status did not increase the odds of developing SRMA.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Only breed increased the odds of developing SRMA. It would be prudent to investigate the genetics of the identified breeds to help elucidate the etiopathogenesis of SRMA.  相似文献

1. U‐14C‐lysine was administered by tube into the crop to turkey poults fed on assay diets (maize + sesame + maize gluten meal) containing varying concentrations oflysine, and partition of the label into body components, carbon dioxide, and excreta was measured.

2. Deposition of 14C label into breast and heart muscles responded positively to dietary lysine concentration. There was no apparent relationship between dietary lysine intake and deposition of label into carbon dioxide or excreta.

3. Efficiency of lysine retention, above maintenance, was estimated to be 0.523 ± 0.034.

4. Turkeys exhibited variable metabolic efficiency in the use of lysine as indicated by loss of U‐14C‐lysine label to expired carbon dioxide and to excreta by individual turkeys.  相似文献

1. Eviscerated air‐chilled turkeys (weighing about 5.5 kg) were stored in groups of 10 at temperatures between 5 and — 2 °C. Slight “off” odour was detected in an average time of 7.2 d at 5 °C, 13.9 d at 2 °C, 22.6 d at 0 °G and about 38 d at ‐2 °C.

2. The microbiological condition of the carcasses was determined initially and after storage at — 2 oC for 28, 35 and 42 d. It was found that, whilst pseudomonads (pigmented and non‐pigmented) were present at 108/cm2 after 35 and 42‐d storage, yeasts were also present at 107/cm2 and probably accounted for the unusual fusty “off” odours.  相似文献

1. In an attempt to quantify the effects of “degree” of pelleting, two experiments were conducted. Diets were prepared by mixing together a mash composed mainly of maize (experiment 1) or sorghum (experiment 2) with soft pellets, or soft pellets mixed with hard pellets.

2. The pelleting degrees (PDs) were as follows: 0 mash; 0·5 mixture of soft pellets and mash 1 to 1; 1 soft pellets pelleted once; 1·5 mixture of soft and hard pellets 1 to 1; 2 hard pellets pelleted twice.

3. In experiment 2, the weight and length of the digestive organs were determined as well as digestive enzyme activities. In both experiments, the behaviour recorded was eating, standing, sitting and drinking.

4. Food intake and body weight gain were related to the degree of pelleting in a curvilinear manner. PD had a positive effect up to a peak (1 to 1·5 PD), after which its effect decreased. Food efficiency was not related to PD. In experiment 1, food efficiency of PDs 1 to 2 were superior to PDs 0 to 0·5 and in experiment 2, PDs 1·5 to 2 were superior to PD 0.

5. The relative weight of the gizzard was reduced by pelleting, whereas pelleting increased the relative weight of abdominal fat. The content of the crop was not affected by PD, whereas that of the proventriculus was lowest in the PD 2 group. Gizzard content was inversely related to PD. Pelleting reduced the length of the jejunum and ileum: which were shortened by about 15% with PDs 1 to 2, as compared to PD 0. The weight/length ratio of the jejunum and ileum tended to increase with increasing PD to a peak at PD 1·5, and to decrease thereafter.

6. Trypsin activity in the pancreas and amylase activity in the intestinal content were reduced by pelleting.

7. Chicks fed pelleted diets were less active: they ‘sat’ more and spent less time eating than their mash‐fed counterparts.  相似文献

Background

In EMS‐associated laminitis, laminar failure may occur in response to energy failure related to insulin resistance (IR) or to the effect of hyperinsulinemia on laminar tissue. 5′‐Adenosine‐monophosphate‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a marker of tissue energy deprivation, which may occur in IR.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To characterize tissue AMPK regulation in ponies subjected to a dietary carbohydrate (CHO) challenge.

Animals

Twenty‐two mixed‐breed ponies.

Methods

Immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting for total AMPK and phospho(P)‐AMPK and RT‐qPCR for AMPK‐responsive genes were performed on laminar, liver, and skeletal muscle samples collected after a 7‐day feeding protocol in which ponies stratified on body condition score (BCS; obese or lean) were fed either a low‐CHO diet (ESC + starch, approximately 7% DM; n = 5 obese, 5 lean) or a high‐CHO diet (ESC + starch, approximately 42% DM; n = 6 obese, 6 lean).

Results

5′‐Adenosine‐monophosphate‐activated protein kinase was immunolocalized to laminar keratinocytes, dermal constituents, and hepatocytes. A high‐CHO diet resulted in significantly decreased laminar [P‐AMPK] in lean ponies (P = .03), but no changes in skeletal muscle (lean, P = .33; obese, P = .43) or liver (lean, P = .84; obese, P = .13) [P‐AMPK]. An inverse correlation existed between [blood glucose] and laminar [P‐AMPK] in obese ponies on a high‐CHO diet.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Laminar tissue exhibited a normal response to a high‐CHO diet (decreased [P‐AMPK]), whereas this response was not observed in liver and skeletal muscle in both lean (skeletal muscle, P = .33; liver, P = .84) and obese (skeletal muscle, P = .43; liver, P = .13) ponies.  相似文献

Abstract

Tree crowns in semi‐arid areas have often been found to create micro‐habitats of improved soil physical and nutrient status and reduced evapotranspiration. These encourage the growth of mesic, palatable and high yielding perennial grasses in otherwise arid environments. A two‐year study, in areas with a long history of light grazing, at Matopos Research Station sought to establish whether the soil nutrient status and micro‐climate under tree crowns are different from those in open areas, and whether the differences are affected by soil type and tree species. The study trees were Terminalia sericea and Acacia karroo. There were consistent patterns in soil nutrient status between understorey and open areas, although these patterns were largely not significant. There was also a consistent pattern in soil volumetric water content of open areas > T. sericea > A. karroo understorey areas. Tree crowns reduced solar radiation reaching understorey areas by an average of 88% and rainfall by an average of 15%. The findings on soil nutrient status are consistent with results from disturbed systems, and challenge the dogma, at least for soil nutrient status, that conservative stocking rates are beneficial.  相似文献

Background

Itraconazole is commonly used to treat systemic fungal infections in dogs, but problems exist with absorption and cost.

Objective

To determine oral bioequivalence of generic and compounded itraconazole compared to original innovator (brand name) itraconazole in healthy dogs.

Animals

Nine healthy, adult research Beagle dogs.

Methods

A randomized, 3‐way, 3‐period, crossover design with an 8‐day washout period. After a 12‐hour fast, each dog received 100 mg (average: 10.5 mg/kg) of either innovator itraconazole, an approved human generic capsule, or compounded itraconazole (compounded using a commercially available compounding vehicle) with a small meal. Plasma was collected at predetermined intervals for high pressure liquid chromatography analysis. Concentration data were analyzed using noncompartmental pharmacokinetics to determine area under the curve (AUC), peak concentration (CMAX), and terminal half‐life. Bioequivalence tests compared generic and compounded itraconazole to the reference formulation.

Results

Average ratios of compounded and generic formulations to the reference formulation of itraconazole for AUC were 5.52% and 104.2%, respectively, and for CMAX were 4.14% and 86.34%, respectively. A test of bioequivalence using 2 one‐sided tests and 90% confidence intervals did not meet bioequivalence criteria for either formulation.

Conclusion and Clinical Importance

Neither generic nor compounded itraconazole is bioequivalent to the reference formulation in dogs. However, pharmacokinetic data for generic formulation were similar enough that therapeutic concentrations could be achieved. Compounded itraconazole produced such low plasma concentrations, it is unlikely to be effective; therefore, compounded itraconazole should not be used in dogs.  相似文献

Background

The ACTH stimulation test is currently required for definitive diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism. Increased cost of synthetic ACTH (cosyntropin) has prompted a search for alternative diagnostic methods.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a cortisol‐to‐ACTH ratio (CAR) can be used to differentiate dogs with hypoadrenocorticism from normal dogs and those with nonadrenal illness.

Animals

Eight healthy dogs (H), 19 dogs with nonadrenal illness (NAI), and 15 dogs with hypoadrenocorticism (HAD).

Methods

Dogs in the HAD group were retrospectively identified from PUVTH medical records. The NAI group consisted of hospitalized dogs with clinical signs, clinicopathologic findings, or both, consistent with a diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism, but in which hypoadrenocorticism was ruled out based on ACTH stimulation test results. Healthy dogs were recruited from hospital staff and students. Endogenous ACTH concentrations and cortisol concentrations before and after ACTH stimulation were measured in all dogs.

Results

Baseline cortisol concentration was significantly lower, and ACTH concentration was significantly higher, in the HAD group versus the H and NAI group (P < .001). However, there was overlap among groups. Cortisol‐to‐ACTH ratio was significantly lower in the HAD group versus the H and NAI groups (P < .001), and there was no overlap between the HAD group and the other 2 groups.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

CAR can be used for definitive diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism.  相似文献

1. A survey was conducted into down‐grading due to breast blisters at a large processing plant.

2. The relationships between incidence of down‐grading and age, body weight, sex, size of rearing site and its distance from the processing plant, and various weather conditions during the rearing period of each flock were examined using regression analysis.

1. The effects of reserpine on plasma glucose, FFA and cholesterol and on adrenal cholesterol were determined in 1‐ and 21‐d‐old chicks over a 24‐h period.

2. Irrespective of age, reserpinised chicks became hyperglycaemic and hypocholesteraemic, their stores of adrenal cholesterol were depleted and the mobilisation of the lipid was impaired. The response of the older bird was quantitatively larger than that of the younger bird.

3. Propranolol prevented the increase in plasma glucose concentration seen 1 h after reserpine but it did not affect subsequent changes.

4. It is concluded that reserpine acts as a stressor and it is shown that its effects have not been entirely overcome after 24 h.  相似文献

1. Average numbers of bacteria on clean and dirty eggs produced from a specified‐pathogen‐free chicken flock were 103.0 and 104.5, respectively. When the eggs were washed with running tap water at about 40°C, the respective bacterial counts were reduced to 102.0 and 102.7, the latter difference being not significant.

2. After fumigation with formaldehyde from 40 ml formalin (372 g formaldehyde/1) and 20 g potassium permanganate/m3 for 1 h, no bacteria were recovered from clean eggs by agar plate culture, while a small number of bacteria were detected in three out of five dirty eggs.

3. Average numbers of bacteria detected in clean fumigated eggs were 100.8 to 101.1 during the first 19 d of incubation and 101.2 and 101.4 were recovered on days 20 and 21 of incubation, respectively. At the end of hatching, eggs containing dead embryos were highly contaminated with 103.8 organisms on average.

4. Fluffs of newly‐hatched chicks scattered inside the hatcher were contaminated with bacteria at 104.0 to 108.4 organisms/g. Water in the basin placed in the hatcher and floating fluffs in water were highly contaminated with bacteria.  相似文献

1. The effects of propranolol (10 mg/kg) on plasma cholesterol, glucose, corticosterone and free fatty acids, on adrenal mass and cholesterol content and on body temperature were determined over a 24‐h period in 3‐week‐old Light Sussex chicks.

2. Changes in plasma cholesterol were equivocal, though there was perhaps a trend towards hypercholesteraemia.

3. Birds became hypoglycaemic within an hour but were hyper‐glycaemic between 2 and 4 h. At 24 h they were normoglycaemic.

4. Plasma corticosterone was increased markedly at 1 h but was decreased compared with the control at 2 h (P<0.01). Thereafter the concentration was in the normal range.

5. There was an enhanced hyperlipacidaemia in the treated birds after 1 h.

6. Adrenal cholesterol stores were decreased by 10% at 4 h but were unaffected at all other times.

7. Colonic temperature decreased by 1–6 °C after 2 h but was normal by4h.

8. It is concluded that propranolol has mild stressor activity which is lost within 24 h.  相似文献

1. Three groups of birds were fed for up to 35 days on diets containing 500 g barley (cv. Condor) /kg diet, with or without exogenous β‐glucanase, either a commercial preparation or a recombinant endoglucanase.

2. Birds which received diets containing the exogenous enzymes grew faster for the first 3 weeks but after that there was no apparent difference in rate of growth.

3. β‐Glucanase activities in the crop and small intestine of birds given exogenous enzymes were generally higher than those of birds given only the basal diet.

4. Viscosity of intestinal fluid in birds given only the basal diet decreased with age but there was no corresponding increase in β‐glucanase activity. This discounts bacterial β‐glucanase as a contributory factor in the adaptation to β‐glucanase apparent in older birds.  相似文献

Pullets from two commercial breeds were fed on diets of similar energy content but with 19% or 16% crude protein to 8 weeks of age and from 8 to 20 weeks of age on one of three isoenergetic diets containing either 12, 14 or 16% crude protein. At 20 weeks the birds were offered a conventional layers’ diet containing 16% crude protein either ad libitum or on a daily food intake of 100 g for a further 32 weeks.

The results indicate that with certain breeds the dietary protein levels can be lowered to approximately 16% during the o to 8‐week period and to approximately 12% during the 8 to 20‐week period without adversely affecting egg production. However, variations in the laying performance of the different breeds appear to be dependent on the amount of protein fed in the first eight weeks of life. Significant breed effects were observed throughout the experiment and although restricted feeding during the laying period substantially reduced the food intake it also had a detrimental effect on the rate of egg production and on the total weight of eggs produced.  相似文献

Summary

A porcine respiratory, non‐enteric virus which is related to the coronavirus transmissible gastroenteritus virus (TGEV) has been isolated in pigs and in cell culture. The isolate was designated TLM 83.

It has become very widespread and enzootic among the swine population in Belgium and in other swine raising countries. It causes an infection of the lungs and appears to spread by aerogenic route. It does not replicate in the enteric tract. The experimental infection in conventional and gnotobiotic pigs in isolation remains subclinical. The infection, either experimental or in the field, results in the formation of antibodies which neutralise the classical enteric TGEV. Based on this relationship, this virus is assumed to be a new TGEV‐related porcine respiratory coronavirus or TGEV itself which has totally lost its tropism for the enteric tract.  相似文献
