There are potential advantages and disadvantages associated with grazing spring perennial ryegrass swards designated for first‐cut silage. These may differ for intermediate‐heading (0·50 ear emergence in the second half of May) and late‐heading (0·50 ear emergence in the first half of June) cultivars. The interactions between cultivar type, spring‐grazing frequency, silage‐harvest date and year were examined in an experiment with a randomized complete block (n = 4) design with a factorial arrangement of treatments, conducted in Ireland. The factors were (i) two perennial ryegrass mixtures: intermediate‐ vs. late‐heading cultivars, (ii) three spring‐grazing regimes: no grazing, grazing in mid‐March or grazing in both mid‐March and mid‐April, (iii) four first‐cut silage‐harvest dates that were at c. 10‐d intervals from 19 May and (iv) 2 years (1998 and 1999). The effects of cultivar mixture on herbage mass of the swards in spring were small and not statistically significant. The late‐heading cultivars provided lower amounts of herbage dry matter for harvesting for first‐cut silage but herbage with higher in vitro organic digestibility values compared with intermediate‐heading cultivars. To achieve the same amount of herbage for silage, the late‐heading cultivars needed to be harvested 8 d later than the intermediate‐heading cultivars. Even with this delay in harvest date, the late‐heading cultivars had higher in vitro organic digestibility values than the intermediate‐heading cultivars. The late‐heading cultivars could be harvested up to 30 d later and produce a higher amount of herbage for first‐cut silage with similar digestibility values compared with the intermediate‐heading cultivars.  相似文献

Abstract Two experiments were carried out in consecutive years to examine the influence of cutting date and restricting fermentation by carboxylic acid treatment on the nutrient intake from grass silage by beef cattle. In year 1, four cutting dates during July and August after a primary growth harvest and, in year 2, five cutting dates of primary growth between mid‐May and early July were examined. Herbage was ensiled either untreated or treated with high levels of acid additive (‘Maxgrass’, mean 8·6 l t?1). Ninety‐six (year 1) or forty‐eight (year 2) continental cross steers were used in partially balanced changeover design experiments with each silage type either unsupplemented or supplemented with 4·5 (year 1) or 5·5 (year 2) kg concentrates head?1 d?1. Silage digestibility declined significantly between initial and final harvest dates (P < 0·001), whereas silage dry‐matter (DM) and digestible energy (DE) intakes were significantly higher in the initial compared with final harvest dates in both years of the study (P < 0·01). Similarly, silage DM and DE intakes, and total DM intakes, of acid‐treated and unsupplemented silages were greater than those of untreated and concentrate supplemented silages, respectively (P < 0·001). The results indicate that earlier cutting dates, and addition of acid to herbage before ensiling, can increase silage DM intake by beef cattle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an early (February; F) or delayed (April; A) primary spring grazing date and two stocking rates, high (H) and medium (M), on the grazing management, dry matter (DM) intake of grass herbage and milk production of spring‐calving dairy cows grazing a perennial ryegrass sward in the subsequent summer. Sixty‐four Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows (mean of 58 d in milk) were assigned to one of four grazing treatments (n = 16) which were imposed from 12 April to 3 July 2004. Cows on the early spring‐grazing treatment were grazed at 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FH) and 4·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FM) while cows on the late‐grazing treatment were grazed at 6·4 cows ha?1 (treatment AH) and 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment AM). The organic matter digestibility and crude protein concentration of the grass herbage were higher on the early‐grazing treatment than on the late‐grazing treatment. The cows on the FM treatment had significantly (P < 0·001) higher milk (24·5 kg), solids‐corrected milk (22·5 kg), fat (P < 0·01, 918 g) and protein (831 g) yields than the other three treatments. Cows on the FM treatment had a higher (P < 0·001) DM intake of grass herbage by 2·3 kg DM per cow per day than cows on the AH treatment, which had a DM intake significantly lower than all other treatments (15·2 kg DM per cow per day). The results of the present study showed that grazing in early spring has a positive effect on herbage quality in subsequent grazing rotations. The study also concluded that early spring‐grazed swards stocked at a medium stocking rate (4·5 cows ha?1; FM) resulted in the highest DM intake of grass herbage and milk production.  相似文献

The effects of levels of application of potassium (K) fertilizer, and its interactions with both nitrogen (N) fertilizer and the growth interval between fertilizer application and harvesting on ryegrass herbage yield and chemical composition, and the fermentation, predicted feeding value, effluent production and dry-matter (DM) recovery of silage were evaluated in a randomized block design experiment. Twenty plots in each of four replicate blocks received either 0, 60, 120, 180 or 240 kg K ha?1, each at either 120 or 168 kg N ha?1. Herbage from the plots was harvested on either 24 May or 8 June and ensiled (6 kg) unwilted, without additive treatment, in laboratory silos. Immediately after harvesting, all plots received 95 kg N ha?1 and were harvested again after a 49-day regrowth interval. From the primary growth, herbage DM yields were 6·31, 6·57, 6·74, 6·93 and 6·93 (s.e. 0·091) t ha?1, herbage K concentrations were 15·5, 16·2, 19·1, 22·4 and 26·1 (s.e. 1·06) g kg?1 DM and herbage ash concentrations were 57, 63, 71, 73 and 76 (s.e. 0·9) g kg?1 DM, and for the primary regrowth herbage DM yields were 2·56, 2·73, 2·83, 2·94 and 2·99 (s.e. 0·056) t ha?1 for the 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 g K ha?1 treatments respectively. Otherwise, the level of K fertilizer did not alter the chemical composition of the herbage at ensiling. After a 120-day fermentation period the silos were opened and sampled. The level of K fertilization had little effect on silage fermentation and had no effect on estimated intake potential, in vitro DM digestibility (DMD), DM recovery or effluent production. Increasing N fertilizer application increased silage buffering capacity (P < 0·05) and the concentrations of crude protein (P < 0·001), ammonia N (P < 0·01) and effluent volume (P < 0·01), and decreased ethanol concentration (P < 0·05) and intake potential (P < 0·05). Except for the concentrations of lactate and butyrate, delaying the harvesting date deleteriously changed the chemical composition (P < 0·001) and decreased intake potential (P < 0·001) and DMD (P < 0·001) of the silages. It is concluded that, other than for K and ash concentration, increasing the level of K fertilizer application did not alter the chemical composition of herbage from the primary growth or the resultant silage. Also, the level of K fertilizer application did not affect predicted feeding value, DM recovery or effluent production. Herbage yield increased linearly with increased fertilizer K application. Except for acetate and ethanol concentrations, there were no level of K fertilizer application by level of N fertilizer application interactions or level of K fertilizer application by harvest date interactions on silage fermentation or predicted feeding value. Increasing N fertilizer application from 120 to 168 kg ha?1 had a more deleterious effect on silage composition and feeding value than increasing K fertilizer application from 0 to 240 kg ha?1. Delaying harvesting was the most important factor affecting herbage yield and composition, and silage composition and had the most deleterious effect on silage feeding value.  相似文献

Growth of grass herbage in Ireland is highly seasonal with little or no net growth from November to February. As a result, feed demand exceeds grass supply during late autumn, winter and early spring. At low stocking rates [≤2 livestock units (LU) ha?1], there is potential to defer some of the herbage grown in autumn to support winter grazing. This study examined the effects of four autumn‐closing dates and four winter‐grazing dates in successive years on the accumulation of herbage mass and on tiller density in winter and subsequent herbage production at two sites in Ireland, one in the south and one in the north‐east. Closing swards from grazing in early and mid‐September (north‐east and south of Ireland respectively) provided swards with >2 t DM ha?1 and a proportion of green leaf >0·65–0·70 of the herbage mass above 4 cm, with a crude protein (CP) concentration of >230 g kg?1 DM and dry matter digestibility (DMD) of >0·700. The effects of autumn‐closing date and winter‐grazing date on herbage production in the subsequent year varied between the two sites. There was no significant effect of autumn‐closing date in the north‐eastern site whereas in the south earlier autumn closing reduced the herbage mass in late March by up to 0·34 t DM ha?1 and delaying winter grazing reduced the herbage mass in late March by up to 0·85 t DM ha?1. The effects of later grazing dates in winter on herbage mass continued into the summer at the southern site, reducing the herbage mass for the period from late March to July by up to 2 t DM ha?1. The effects of imposing treatments in successive years did not follow a consistent pattern and year‐to‐year variation was most likely linked to meteorological conditions.  相似文献

Under Irish conditions, the digestibility in May of grass managed for silage production is sometimes lower than expected. In each of two successive years, replicate field plots were established to examine the effects of three defoliation heights (uncut or cut to a stubble height of 10 or 5 cm) applied in winter and/or spring on herbage yields harvested in May and again in July, and on chemical composition and conservation characteristics associated with first‐cut silage. Swards that were not defoliated in December or March had a dry‐matter (DM) yield and in vitro DM digestibility (DMD) in mid‐May of 6597 kg ha?1 and 736 g kg?1, respectively, in Year 1, and corresponding values of 7338 kg ha?1 and 771 g kg?1 in Year 2. Defoliating swards to 5 cm in December reduced (P < 0·001) May DM yields compared to swards that were not defoliated in both December and March, while herbage DMD in May increased (P < 0·001) when defoliated in December or March. There were no clear effects of defoliation height or its timing on herbage ensilability or resultant conservation efficiency characteristics. The effects of defoliation on July yield were the reverse of those observed for May, while the total yield of the December and March defoliations plus the two silage harvests increased as defoliation height was lowered in Year 2 only. It is concluded that defoliation in winter and/or spring can increase herbage digestibility but will likely reduce DM yields in May.  相似文献

Herbage, predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) grown in Northern Ireland, was harvested at four dates from June to October 1996 (H1, H2, H3 and H4). At each harvest approximately one-fifth of the grass harvested was artificially dried and pelleted (G). The remainder of the grass was either wilted for 28–52 h (W), depending on the weather conditions, or ensiled directly, i.e. unwilted (UW). Within the W and UW treatments an inoculant or formic acid additive was applied to the herbage before ensiling. After a minimum ensiling period of 10 weeks, sixty steers, mean initial live weight 432 (s.d. 37) kg, were offered the twenty forages in a four-period partially balanced changeover design experiment. Each period was of 2 weeks’ duration. Dry-matter (DM) intakes were recorded daily, with intakes in the second week of each period used in the statistical analysis of the data. The digestibility of each of the forages was also determined in vivo using four castrated male sheep per silage. Wilting increased the DM content of the silage and the pH, the largest increase in DM content occurring at the second harvest. On average, wilting proportionally increased silage DM intake by 0·21 compared with the unwilted silage (P < 0·001), but the intake of the wilted silage was not significantly different from that of the artificially dried and pelleted grass (P > 0·05). The intake of the wilted silage was higher than that of the unwilted silage at each harvest, the proportional increases being 0·22 (P < 0·001), 0·41 (P < 0·001), 0·19 (P < 0·001) and 0·05 (P > 0·05) at harvests H1, H2, H3 and H4 respectively. Treatment of the grass with formic acid before ensiling resulted in a proportional increase in silage intake of 0·08 compared with the inoculant-treated silage (P < 0·05). Compared with the inoculant-treated silage, formic acid increased silage intake by 0·08, 0·02, 0·14 and 0·10 at harvests H1 (P > 0·05), H2 (P > 0·05), H3 (P < 0·01) and H4 (P < 0·05). The results of this study indicate that the effect of wilting on silage intake varies across different harvests and additive treatments. The difference in response to wilting across different harvests is mainly a result of the prevailing weather conditions during wilting.  相似文献

First and second harvests of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and a lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture [80 or 144 g kg?1 dry matter (DM) of ryegrass] at the first and second harvests were cut and conditioned, wilted to 500 or 700 g DM kg?1 then baled and stretch‐wrapped for silage on the same dates. Lucerne bales were denser (411 kg m?3) than bales of perennial ryegrass (331 kg m?3) (P < 0·05). After an 8‐month storage period, silage made from high DM‐content forage had a higher concentration of neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF) and was less digestible than that made from low DM‐content forage. Daily DM intakes by beef steers, when the silages of the second harvest were fed ad libitum, were 31·2, 31·2 and 22·3 g kg?1 live weight for lucerne, lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture and perennial ryegrass silages, respectively (P < 0·01), when the herbage had been wilted to 500 g kg?1. In vivo digestibility of NDF in the lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage (0·587) was significantly lower than that of perennial ryegrass silage (0·763) but higher than lucerne silage (0·518). Higher intakes of baled lucerne silage tended to offset its lower digestibility values. Lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage had a higher DM and NDF digestibility than lucerne silage, indicating perhaps the presence of associative effects.  相似文献

The provision of grass for early spring grazing in Ireland is critical for spring calving grass‐based milk production systems. This experiment investigated the effect of a range of autumn closing dates (CD), on herbage mass (kg DM ha?1), leaf area index (LAI) and tiller density (m?2) during winter and early spring. Thirty‐six grazing paddocks, closed from 23 September to 1 December 2007, were grouped to create five mean CD treatments – 29 September, 13 October, 27 October, 10 November, 24 November. Herbage mass, tiller density and LAI were measured every 3 weeks from 28 November 2007 to 20 February 2008; additionally, herbage mass was measured prior to initial spring grazing and tiller density was measured intermittently until September 2008. Delaying CD until November significantly (P < 0·05) reduced herbage mass (by approximately 500 kg DM ha?1) and LAI (by approximately 0·86 units) in mid‐February. On average, 35% of herbage mass present on swards on 20 February was grown between 28 November and 30 January. LAI was positively correlated with herbage mass (R2 = 0·78). Herbage mass increased by approximately 1000 kg DM ha?1 as spring grazing was delayed from February to April. Tiller density increased from November to February, although it did fluctuate, and it was greatest in April (9930 m?2). This experiment concludes that in the south of Ireland adequate herbage mass for grazing in early spring can be achieved by delaying closing to early mid‐October; swards required for grazing after mid‐March can be closed during November.  相似文献

Excellent winter hardiness, persistence and nutritive value of both kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb.) and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) suggest that intercropping these species could substitute for lucerne (Medicago sativa L.). The dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of herbage, and silage characteristics of kura clover‐reed canarygrass (KC‐RCG) herbage, were compared to those of lucerne over two growth cycles near Arlington, WI, USA. First and second growths of lucerne and KC‐RCG herbage were sampled four times at 1‐week intervals and ensiled for 100 d. Yield of DM of the KC‐RCG was 0·23–0·57 greater than that of lucerne on sampling dates in the first growth cycle, with no differences in DM yield in the second growth cycle. The pH of lucerne silage was lower than that of KC‐RCG silage in the first growth, and the opposite occurred in second growth, which was attributed to maturity differences and the proportion of kura clover in the mixture. Lactate concentration was lower in KC‐RCG than lucerne silages in both growth cycles. The lucerne and KC‐RCG silages had similar in vitro DM digestibility except for the final sampling date in the first growth cycle when neutral‐detergent fibre concentration of KC‐RCG herbage exceeded 550 g kg?1 DM. Crude protein concentration was greater in lucerne silage than in KC‐RCG silage in both growth cycles. Overall, differences in nutritive value and silage fermentation between the two herbages were minimal across growth cycles. These results suggest that a KC‐RCG sward is a viable alternative to lucerne in northern environments of the USA where lucerne production may be limited by winter injury or edaphic factors.  相似文献

The effects on the performance of dairy cows offered kale, swedes, and perennial ryegrass in situ and perennial ryegrass silage fed indoors to dairy cows pre‐partum during winter in Ireland was examined. Eighty‐eight spring‐calving dairy cows were randomly assigned to one of four offered treatments; (i) 8 kg of dry matter (DM) of kale leaf and stem + 4 kg DM of perennial ryegrass silage (treatment K), (ii) 8 kg DM of the root and leaf of swedes + 4 kg DM of perennial ryegrass silage (treatment S), (iii) 12 kg DM of perennial ryegrass herbage (treatment G) offered in situ and (iv) perennial ryegrass silage offered ad libitum indoors (treatment ID). Cows on treatments K, S and ID had a greater (P < 0·001) increase in body condition score (0·20, 0·14 and 0·50 units respectively) pre‐partum than cows on treatment G which lost 0·22 units. Pre‐partum treatment had no effect on variables of milk production in the following lactation. In the first 100 d of lactation, cows on treatment G pre‐partum had a lower milk fat concentration (35·6 g kg?1) compared with cows on treatments S and ID (38·3 and 39·3 g kg?1 respectively). There was no effect of treatment on the intervals between parturition and first insemination (mean 74·6 d) and conception (mean 96·1 d). The results suggest that offering kale and swedes to dairy cows pre‐partum resulted in a similar lactation performance to dairy cows grazing a perennial ryegrass sward or offered perennial ryegrass silage indoors.  相似文献

Eight field-plot experiments were carried out on established grassland swards between 1984 and 1988 to examine the effects of date and rate of application of calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) on herbage dry matter (DM) yield and apparent efficiency of nitrogen (N) use at first-cut silage.
CAN application significantly increased ( P <0 ·001) the mean yields of herbage and N uptakes by herbage in all experiments. Herbage yields were similar ( P > 0·05) with N rates of 100 kg ha−1, 125 kg ha−1 or 150 kg ha−1 in five experiments but in the other three there were increases above 100 kg ha−1. Date of N application had a significant effect on DM yield in three experiments; this effect was inconsistent for both single and split dressings. Lower production was associated with reduced uptake of N, a trend that primarily reflected lower DM yields and not wide herbage N content variation.
It is concluded that selection of the date on which to apply fertilizer N in early spring to obtain optimum herbage yields at first-cut silage often required little precision. The use of fertilizer N rates >100 kg ha−1 should be questioned where there are likely to be appreciable quantities of available N derived from non-fertilizer sources.  相似文献

The effects of allowance of extended (deferred) grazed herbage (AEGH) and herbage allocation management (HAM) were studied in ewe lambs (248) and late‐gestation ewes (152), respectively, on commercial farms in south‐east Ireland in 2005–06. In Experiment 1, which consisted of four treatments, the effects of AEGH (0·75, 1·25 and 1·75 kg DM per head daily) and concentrate supplementation (0·5 kg per head daily with the 0·75 kg DM herbage allowance) on lamb performance during the extended grazing (16 December to 3 March) and subsequent grazing (4 March to 11 August) seasons were evaluated. Increasing AEGH increased herbage intake linearly (P < 0·001) and live weight (P < 0·001) at the end of extended grazing and the subsequent grazing season. In Experiment 2, single‐ and twin‐bearing ewes were allocated to either a conventional (single‐ and twin‐bearing ewes grazed separately) or leader–follower system (twin‐ and single‐bearing ewes, as leaders and followers respectively) of HAM from 30 January to 24 March. The same quantities of herbage were offered daily for each system. System of HAM affected ewe condition score at lambing but did not alter (P > 0·05) subsequent lamb birth or weaning weights. It is concluded that increasing AEGH to ewe lambs increased liveweight gain during extended grazing and resulted in heavier animals in mid August of the subsequent grazing season. For ewe lambs each 1 kg concentrate DM had the same feed value as 2·4 kg DM AEGH. Use of a leader–follower system for ewes in late pregnancy did not alter lamb birth weight or subsequent performance.  相似文献

Crop composition at harvest affects the ensiling process and the resulting silage quality. The objectives of this study were to determine: (i) the effect of annual N‐fertilizer application (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N ha?1) and developmental stage (stem elongation, early heading, late heading and early flowering) on the ensiling properties and silage quality of the spring regrowth of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) at two sites for 1 or 2 years, and (ii) the relationship between ensiling properties of the forage and the quality of the resulting silage. Laboratory silos with wilted forage at approximately 350 g dry matter (DM) kg?1 of fresh matter were prepared at each harvest and opened 150 d later for silage analysis. Higher rates of N‐fertilizer application decreased the concentration of water‐soluble carbohydrates (WSC), increased the buffering capacity (BC) and nitrate concentration, and decreased the ratio of WSC:BC, primarily in the early stages of development. The ensiling properties of timothy were, therefore, less favourable when high rates of N fertilizer were applied. Silage pH generally increased with increasing rates of N‐fertilizer application; this increase was particularly evident at the first three developmental stages at one site in 1 year. Non‐protein N (NPN) and soluble N concentrations of the silages increased with increased rates of N‐fertilizer application at the first three developmental stages but decreased at early flowering. Ammonia‐N concentration in the silages increased by 0·85, 0·56 and 0·67 when rates of N‐fertilizer application were 60, 120 and 180 kg ha?1, respectively, compared with that when no N fertilizer was applied. Significant correlations between the composition of the forage ensiled and silage quality variables were found at sites in individual years but, when all data were combined, WSC concentration and BC, and their ratio in the forages, were not correlated with pH, and soluble‐N and ammonia‐N concentrations of the silages, and were weakly correlated with NPN and free amino acid‐N concentrations of the silages. Silage quality was reduced by increased N‐fertilizer application, primarily at the early developmental stages, and this can be attributed to a reduction in WSC concentration and an increase in BC of the forage. Water‐soluble carbohydrate concentration, BC, and their ratio, however, were poor predictors of silage quality.  相似文献

The effect of spreading mown perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) herbage over the total ground area on water loss during field-wilting was compared with leaving herbage in swaths (three swaths put together into one, occupying 0·18 of ground area) in three experiments. Spread crops were not tedded during wilting but were rowed up immediately before harvest. In all experiments, conventional silage-making equipment was used on a field scale. Feeding value was assessed with lactating dairy cows and growing heifers (Experiment 1) and sheep (Experiment 3). The periods of field wilting were 48 h (Experiment 1), 24 h (Experiment 2) and both 24 h and 48 h (Experiment 3). Spreading the crop was associated with larger increases in loss of water in all three experiments compared with leaving grass in swaths. Losses of dry matter (DM) during wilting were similar in Experiment 2 but were higher for the swathed crop wilted for 48 h than for 24 h in Experiment 3. Spreading resulted in restricted fermentations associated with higher crop DM contents at ensiling. In Experiment 1 the concentrations of DM, ash and water-soluble carbohydrate in silage were higher (P < 0·001) for spreading the crop and the concentrations of crude protein and neutral-detergent fibre were lower (P < 0·05) than for swathed material. In Experiment 3, spreading was associated with higher concentrations of water-soluble carbohydrates and ethanol and lower concentrations of fermentation acids, ammonia-N and neutralizing value in silage. Voluntary DM intake of silage by dairy cows and heifers was higher for spread than for swathed material (P < 0·05), but in Experiment 3 (sheep) there were no significant differences between treatments in voluntary intake of DM. The increased intake by dairy cows of silage from spread herbage was reflected in increased concentrations of milk fat (P < 0·01) and protein (P < 0·05) but not in milk yield (P > 0·05). It is concluded that spreading herbage during field wilting prior to ensiling accelerates water loss and has the potential to improve the feeding value of the ensiled product.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the effects of maize hybrid and harvest date on the yield, quality and subsequent conservation characteristics of whole‐crop, cob and stover silages. The experiment had a split‐plot design, with three main plots (date of harvest) and six subplots (hybrid) in each of three replicate blocks. Four maize hybrids (Tassilo, Beethoven, Andante and Nescio) were conventional hybrids used in commercial livestock production in Ireland, and two were categorized as high‐biomass hybrids (Atletico and KXA 7211). The three harvest dates – 16 September, 7 October and 28 October – represented early, normal and late harvests respectively. Averaged across hybrids, harvesting on 16 September reduced the DM yield (P < 0·05) and starch concentration (P < 0·01) of whole‐crop and cob, and decreased the neutral detergent fibre (P < 0·05) and acid detergent fibre (P < 0·01) contents of stover. Later harvesting date generally resulted in a more restricted, heterolactic fermentation that was associated with increased dry‐matter (DM) content at ensiling. Whole‐crop and stover from Atletico and KXA 7211 generally had higher DM yields (P < 0·05) and a more extensive fermentation compared to Tassilo, Andante and Nescio. Despite the high‐biomass hybrids having a higher DM yield than conventional hybrids, the high‐biomass hybrids had a lower (P < 0·05) content of cob and a corresponding higher (P < 0·05) content of stover. The changes in proportions of cob and stover in whole‐crop maize with later harvesting significantly influenced its silage digestibility and conservation characteristics.  相似文献

The yield and chemical composition of thirteen Lotus corniculatus varieties and one Lotus uliginosus variety, when grown and ensiled in the UK, were investigated. Replicate plots of each variety were established in a randomized block design. Dry‐matter (DM) yield was measured over two harvest years. At cuts 1 and 2 of the first harvest year, 1 kg of each variety was ensiled and sub‐sampled for chemical analysis. At cut 2 of the second harvest year, sub‐samples of forage were analysed for condensed tannins. Two L. corniculatus varieties, Oberhaunstaedter and Lotar, had higher DM yields (with Oberhaunstaedter having the highest DM yield at cut 3) in both harvest years compared with other varieties (P < 0·001). Chemical analyses showed differences among silages of varieties of L. corniculatus (P < 0·001) and that the ammonia‐N concentration of L. uliginosus silage was higher than that of L. corniculatus (P < 0·001), despite its lactic acid concentrations being within the range observed for L. corniculatus (17 g kg?1 DM vs. 13–19 g kg?1 DM). Differences (P < 0·001) in HCl/Butanol test absorbance units were found among varieties of L. corniculatus, indicating possible differences in concentrations of condensed tannins. Overall, the variety Oberhaunstaedter was found to be the most suitable variety for silage production. Based on its agronomic performance, L. corniculatus does not compare well with other legumes such as red clover.  相似文献

This 6‐year experiment quantified the impacts of management factors on red clover yield, persistence, nutritive value and ensilability, and compared these with perennial ryegrass receiving inorganic N fertilizer. Within a randomized complete block design, field plots were used to evaluate a 2 (cultivar, Merviot and Ruttinova) × 2 (alone and with perennial ryegrass) × 2 (0 and 50 kg fertilizer N ha?1 in mid‐March) × 2 (harvest schedule) combination of the factors relating to red clover, and a 2 (harvest schedule) × 4 (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha?1 for each cut) combination of the factors relating to perennial ryegrass. The early and late harvest schedules both involved four cuts per year, but commenced a fortnight apart. Red clover treatments averaged 14 906 kg dry matter (DM) ha?1 per year, whereas perennial ryegrass receiving 600 kg inorganic N fertilizer per year averaged 14 803 kg DM ha?1 per year. There was no yield decline evident across years despite a decline in the proportion of red clover. The early harvest schedule and sowing ryegrass with red clover increased the herbage yield and digestibility. March application of fertilizer N to red clover treatments reduced the annual yield. Early harvest schedule increased and both fertilizer N and sowing with ryegrass decreased the proportion of red clover. Sowing with ryegrass improved the indices of ensilability, but reduced the crude protein content. Both red clover cultivars had similar performance characteristics. A selected red clover‐based treatment, considered to exhibit superior overall production characteristics, outyielded N‐fertilized perennial ryegrass in mid‐season. However, it had poorer digestibility and ensilability indices.  相似文献

The effect of offering a total mixed ration of silage and concentrate (proportionately 0·44 silage) system [indoor feeding system (IF)] was compared with grazing at a high daily herbage allowance with a low level of concentrate supplementation [early grazing system (EG)] in early spring on the performance of spring‐calving dairy cows in Ireland. Sixty‐four spring‐calving Holstein–Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date, 2 February) were allocated to one of two systems between 16 February and 4 April 2004. An equal number of primiparous and multiparous cows were assigned to each system. The dairy cows on the IF system were housed for a 7‐week period and offered a diet of 10·9 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 2·3) of concentrate, the remainder of the diet was 8·6 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 1·9) of grass silage. The dairy cows on the EG system were offered a mean daily herbage allowance of 15·1 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 3·7) and were supplemented with 3·0 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 1·0) of concentrate. There was no difference in milk yield between the two systems but the cows in the EG system had a higher milk protein concentration (2·9 g kg?1) and a higher milk protein yield than in the IF system. Milk fat concentration was higher for cows in the IF than EG system (3·0 g kg?1). There was no difference in total daily dry‐matter intake between the systems, measured in week 6 of the study. Mean live weight of the cows in the IF system was greater than in the EG system. The results of the study suggest that a slightly greater performance can be achieved by a system offering a high daily herbage allowance to spring‐calving dairy cows in early lactation compared with a system offering a total mixed ration containing a high proportion of concentrate with grass silage.  相似文献

Eight varieties of perennial ryegrass (six new varieties and two old ones) grown at five levels of applied fertilizer (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 kg of N ha–1) were cut monthly during two growing seasons (March to October in 1997 and 1998) and their herbage dry‐matter (DM) yield and nitrogen (N) content were determined. Herbage leaf content and the N content of young fully expanded leaves were also measured in 1997, and monthly recovery of applied N was determined in both the first and second harvest years by using 15N. The rank order of varieties was similar for annual yield of DM and N at all five fertilizer levels. Proportional differences between varieties in DM yield were greatest in the first cut of each year, the late‐heading candidate variety Ba12151 out‐yielding the old late‐heading variety S23 by more than 70%. However, differences in annual DM yield were much more modest than in early spring yield, up to 10% in 1997 and up to 21% in 1998. The relatively small differences in total annual DM yield were attributed to only a small proportion of the applied N being recovered during a single regrowth period, most of the remainder becoming available for uptake in subsequent regrowth periods. There were small but highly statistically significant differences among varieties in the N content of their leaves, leaf N content being inversely related to yield of DM and N. This lends further support to the hypothesis that the metabolic cost of protein synthesis and turnover is a key factor controlling genetic variation both in leaf yield and in annual DM and N yield under frequent harvesting. Seasonal variation in herbage N content was much greater than differences among varieties in mean N content over all harvests. In May of both years at all applied fertilizer levels, herbage N content fell below the 20 g N kg–1 DM level required by productive grazing animals.  相似文献
