Erratum

The last sentence of the report "Crassulacean acid metabolism in the strangler Clusia rosea Jacq." (6 Sept., p. 969) was incorrectly printed. It should have read, "The 1985 expedition was led by I. P. Ting and J. Hann, with L. Blose, R. E. Bonning, J. C. Broyles, D. W. Stewart, and J. A. Zabilski as participants."     

Erratum

The caption for the photograph accompanying the review of Neurobiology of Arachnids (28 Mar., p. 1610) should have read, "Peocilotheria regalis, an Indian bird-spider. Beneath it is a spike train recorded from a sensory neuron responding to mechanical stimuli in the spider Cupiennius salei."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the Random Samples item "Processing the new Coke fiasco" (3 Sept., p. 1271), Samuel Leven's name was misspelled.     

Erratum

In the report by A. Persechini and D. J. Hartshorne (18 Sept., p. 1383), the abscissa of the insert in Fig. 2 is labeled incorrectly. It should read "(32)P incorporation/kinase (microg/ml)."

In Eliot Marshall's News & Comment article "Old bones solve new problems" (15 Sept., p. 1185), the term "pubic symphysis" was misspelled in the third sentence of the sixth paragraph.     

Diagnostic imaginary for Florida

The Random Sample item "Diagnostic imagery for Florida" (8 Sept., p. 1343) should have stated that the accompanying map shows the Caloosahatchee River flowing out of Lake Okeechobee (to the Gulf of Mexico), not intoit.     

Erratum

In the last paragraph of Arthur L. Robinson's Research News article "High spatial resolution ion microprobe" (14 Sept., p. 1137), J. Ronald Hass' name was misspelled.     

Clarification

In the cover caption for the issue of 6 September (p. 1069), the magnification for the image of the mite Proctlaelaps regalis was approximately 400 times its actual body size (actual length was about 500 micrometers).     

Erratum

The caption for figure 1 (p. 1497) of the report "Transformation by v-sis occurs by an internal autoactivation mechanism" by B. E. Bejcek et al. (29 Sept., p. 1496) was inadvertently not printed. The caption should have read, "Fig. 1. (A) Plasmid pSEB3 (B) Mutations used."     

Erratum

In the article by Jane Menken et al. "Age and infertility" (26 Sept., p. 1389), the first sentence under the sidehead "Diagnosus of infertility by failure to conceive within a year" (p. 1390, column two, paragraph two) should have read: "The historical evidence indicates that the proportion of women who were sterile increased rather slowly and almost linearly from the 20's until the early 40's.     

Erratum

In the report "Birth of projection neurons in adult avian brain may be related to perceptual or motor learning" by Arturo Alvarez-Buylla et al. (21 Sept., p. 1444), parts B and C in figure 1 were transposed. The legend is correct.

In two Research News articles by Arthur L. Robinson (24 Aug., p. 822; 14 Sept., p. 1137), the affiliations of three researchers were given incorrectly. Peter Smith and Thirumalai Venkatesan (24 Aug.) are with Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), not AT&T Bell Laboratories, as stated. David Hwang (14 Sept.) is also with Bellcore.

In the second paragraph of the letter ;;Bacillus thuringiensis and pest control' by Marvin K. Harris (6 Sept., p. 1075), the name of the polyphagus insect pest Helicoverpa zea was incorrectly spelled.     

Science scope

In figure 1 (p. 1509) of the Research Article "Radar images of Mars" by D. O. Muhleman et al. (27 Sept., p. 1508), the Mars longitude of the sub-Earth point was mislabeled in each of the six snapshot radar images of Mars. None of the labels should have contained a decimal point. The values of lambda in the labels should have been 78, 92, 104, 120, 133, and 147, respectively.     

葡萄透翅蛾防治药剂筛选及防控技术研究

[目的]筛选能够有效防治葡萄透翅蛾的杀虫剂。[方法]通过田间试验测定了6种药剂常用剂量对葡萄透翅蛾的防治效果,同时应用农业等措施集成防治技术。[结果]葡萄透翅蛾发生初期喷施有效剂量甲氨基阿维菌素苯甲酸盐7.5 g/hm2、阿维菌素13.5 g/hm2、高效氯氟氰菊酯25 g/hm2等,可有效防治葡萄透翅蛾的发生。[结论]为葡萄透翅蛾的防治提供了参考依据。     

Insertional mutagenesis of the Drosophila genome with single P elements

A versatile genetic method for identifying and cloning Drosophila melanogaster genes affecting any recognizable phenotype is described. Strains are constructed in which the insertion of a single P transposable element has caused a new mutation, greatly simplifying the genetic and molecular analysis of the affected gene. Mutagenesis is initiated by crossing two strains, each of which contains a specially designed P element. One element (jumpstarter), encoding P element transposase, efficiently mobilizes the second nonautonomous transposon (mutator), whose structure facilitates selection and cloning of new insertion mutations. Random mutator transpositions are captured in individual stocks that no longer contain jumpstarter, where they remain stable. This method was used to construct 1300 single P element insertion stocks which were then screened for recessive mutations. A library of single-element insertion strains will allow the structure and function of Drosophila genes to be readily correlated, and should have many other applications in Drosophila molecular genetics.

In the article "String as a theory of everything" by M. Mitchell Waldrop (Research News, 20 Sept., p. 1251), the last line of the first column was inadvertantly omitted. The affected sentence should have read, "Not only were the strong interactions far more complex than predicted by field theory, but the particles that participated in the strong interactions-the hadrons, a group that includes protons, neutrons, pi mesons, and many others-seemed to be relatively large, extended objects as much as 1 Fermi across (10(-13) centimeter)." In the next-to-the-last line of the second full paragraph in column 2 on page 1252, 10(-19) should have been 10(+19). Finally, the words "quandary" (page 1251, column 1, paragraph 6, line 2) and "quark" (page 1252, column 3, last paragraph, line 18) were misspelled.     

Erratum

The caption for the photograph on page 1405 in Leslie Roberts' article "Federal report on acid rain draws criticism" (News & Comment, 18 Sept., p. 1404) incorrectly implies that acid rain has damaged spruce trees on Whiteface Mountain. The cause of the spruce decline is not yet known, although air pollution is generally believed to have contributed.
