This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation of pregnant and lactating mares with concentrated dried live yeast culture on the nutrient content and rate of production of milk during early lactation and on the growth of their nursing foals. Pregnant mares were fed the same diets, with or without 20 g/day of yeast culture, from 4 weeks before foaling through the eighth week of lactation. Milk production at the onset of lactation, as measured by the weigh-suckle-weigh technique, was significantly stimulated by yeast culture supplementation, although the effect was only temporary. However, the nutrient composition of mares milk was altered by continued yeast culture supplementation through at least the eighth week of lactation. Gross energy (kcal/100 g milk), sugar, fat, protein and total amino acid contents (g/100 g milk) were significantly increased. The concentrations of a number of individual amino acids tended to be greater in the milk of supplemented mares, but most of these individual differences were not statistically significant. The intakes of energy (Mcal/day), sugars, fat, protein, total amino acids, leucine, lysine, serine and valine (g/day) were significantly greater by the foals nursing supplemented mares through 8 weeks. The foals nursing supplemented mares exhibited significantly greater rates of gain by the fourth week of life, and faster growth at the withers after 6 weeks. The efficiency of converting mare feed to neonatal body mass was 24% greater in the foals of supplemented mares, These data indicate that supplementing mares with dietary yeast culture during early lactation resulted in more efficient and rapid growth of their nurslings.  相似文献

Two groups of previously unconditioned young adult horses participated in 6 weeks of gradually increasing exercise on an inclined plane treadmill while receiving a cornoats-hay diet with or without a commercially available dietary yeast culture preparation. Forced treadmill exercise at a workload of 11.98 j/kg/m, equivalent to a workrate of 18.34 j/sec/kg and an estimated ground speed of 5.36 m/sec, began at 5 minutes per day (2.75 Mjoules/500 kg body-weight) and was increased by 5 minutes per week to a maximum of 35 minutes per day (19.25 Mjoules/500 kg) after 6 weeks. Treadmill exercise increased venous plasma lactate concentrations in direct proportion to the duration of an exercise bout, but the increases tended to be smaller after a given amount of work as the horses became conditioned. At the end of 35 minutes of exercise, plasma lactate concentrations averaged 30.08 mg/dl in the supplemented horses and 41.29 mg/dl in the unsupplemented horses (p<.01). Plasma glucose concentrations decreased significantly and triglyceride concentrations increased significantly in both groups as exercise duration exceed 10 minutes. Changes in plasma glucose concentrations were not significantly affected by yeast culture supplementation, while the supplemented horses exhibited somewhat slower rates of increased plasma triglyceride concentrations. During the 35-minute exercise bouts, significantly lower heart rates were recorded in the supplemented horses during the first 5 and the final 10 minutes of the workouts (p<.01), suggesting an enhanced state of athletic fitness. The digestible energy required for work (Mcal/500 kg bodyweight) was calculated to be 0.454 (Mcal/Mjoule) (Mjoules of work/500 kg bodyweight) + 0.024 Mcal/500 kg bodyweight (r2=0.95), with an efficiency of converting dietary DE to work of 53% for both groups of horses. Although the exercise challenges to these horses were not severe, these results suggest that dietary yeast culture supplementation of horses entering into conditioning programs may well enhance athletic training.  相似文献

In order to test the hypothesis that an improvement in the quality of the dietary protein fed lactating mares would improve the growth of their nursling foals, Thoroughbred mares were fed approximately isonitrogenous diets differing slightly in their amino acid compositions during the last 2 weeks of gestation and the first 7 weeks of lactation. The differences in the diets resulted from the substitution of a portion of the complete pelleted feed with soybean meal (SBM). The crude protein content of mares' milk was significantly increased by SBM substitution during the first 5 weeks of lactation. However, SBM did not prevent the gradual decline in protein content typical of mares' milk during the course of lactation. The relative amino acid composition of mares' milk was not changed by SBM substitution, suggesting that more growth-limiting amino acids were provided to the foals suckling from SBM-supplemented mares. The plasma concentrations of lysine, methionine, leucine, phenylalanine, histidine and valine were significantly greater in the foals of SBM-supplemented mares. Those foals grew in withers height about 10% more rapidly during their first 7 weeks of life. These findings indicate that the growth of nursing foals is responsive to the amino acid composition of their dams' diets.  相似文献

Gentamicin sulfate-induced nephrotoxicosis was compared in 2 groups of horses fed different rations. Four horses were fed only alfalfa hay, and 4 other horses were fed only whole oats. Seven days after initiation of the diet, all horses were given gentamicin IV (5 mg/kg of body weight) every 12 hours for 22 days. Urinary gamma-glutamyl-transferase to urinary creatinine (UGGT:UCr) ratio was calculated daily, and serum concentration of gentamicin was measured at 1 and 12 hours after drug administration. Results indicated that horses fed oats had greater renal tubular damage than did horses fed alfalfa. Mean UGGT:UCr for horses fed alfalfa was 47.1 +/- 18.8 and was 100.0 +/- 19.0 for horses fed oats (P = 0.007). The UGGT:UCr in horses fed oats was greater than 100 for a total of 54 days; horses fed alfalfa had UGGT:UCr greater than 100 for only 7 days. Two horses not given gentamicin were fed only oats and 2 were fed only alfalfa. These horses had mean UGGT:UCr of 17.6 +/- 2.2 and 30.5 +/- 3.0, respectively. Mean peak and trough concentrations of gentamicin were statistically different for horses fed oats and those fed alfalfa (peak 23.16 +/- 1.87 and 14.07 +/- 1.79 micrograms/ml, respectively [P = 0.0001], and trough, 1.81 +/- 0.69 and 0.71 +/- 0.70 micrograms/ml, respectively [P = 0.0270]). Mean half-lives of gentamicin (estimated from peak and trough concentrations) for horses fed alfalfa (2.58 +/- 0.26 hours) and horses fed oats (2.88 +/- 0.27 hours) were not significantly different. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding oats alone before or after feeding chopped alfalfa or, in admixture with the alfalfa on the glycaemic and insulinaemic responses of horses as well as post-prandial breath hydrogen and methane excretion. Horses were fed in a randomized order, chopped alfalfa as a source of dietary fibre and unprocessed oats as a source of starch. Chopped alfalfa intake was adjusted to a crude fibre intake of 0.5 g/kg bodyweight (BW) per meal and the oats intake was adjusted to a starch intake of 2 g/kg BW per meal. The feeds were offered in three different ways: (i) alfalfa followed by oats (A/O), (ii) oats followed by alfalfa (O/A) or (iii) a mixture of alfalfa and oats (A + O). Oats alone were used as a control. Blood and breath were collected after the test meal was fed at the end of a 11.5-h overnight fast following a 10-day acclimatization period. The highest glycaemic and insulinaemic responses were measured when the A/O and O/A diets orders were fed, whereas most hydrogen was produced after feeding oats alone. It was concluded that adding alfalfa chaff to a meal of oats prolonged the pre-caecal digestion of starch, but there was no evidence for any effect on pre-caecal starch digestibility.  相似文献

Effects of four kinds of diets on nutrient digestion and metabolism and blood biochemical indexes of one-year-old Yili horse were studied in this experiment.16 health horses(all males) with an average body weight of (227.38±16.48)kg and similar age (one-year old) were used in a staging and grouping experiment design.First stage had groupsⅠ and Ⅱ,second stage had groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ.The horses of group Ⅰ were fed with alfalfa 8 kg/d,pelleted concentrate 0 kg/d; The horses of group Ⅱ were fed with alfalfa 7 kg/d,pelleted concentrate 1 kg/d;The horses of group Ⅲ were fed with alfalfa 6.3 kg/d,pelleted concentrate 1.7 kg/d;The horses of group Ⅳ were fed with alfalfa 5.6 kg/d,pelleted concentrate 2.4 kg/d.Each stage lasted for 21 d (15 d pretrial period and 6 d trial period).The results showed that the digestibility of DM,OM,CP and P were increased with increasing of feed levels of pelleted concentrate,while the digestibility of NDF,ADF and Ca showed downtrend.DE and ME were significantly increased with increasing of feed levels of pelleted concentrate (P > 0.05).N retention and retention rate showed an increasing tendency,N retention and retention rate of groups Ⅲ and Ⅳ were extremely significant higher than those in group Ⅰ (P < 0.01).Ca retention and retention rate decreased with increasing of feed levels of pelleted concentrate,and Ca retention and retention rate of group Ⅰ were extremely significant higher than those in groups Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ (P < 0.01).P retention was extremely significant increased with increasing of feed levels of pelleted concentrate (P < 0.01).There were no significant difference in the content of TP among all trial groups (P > 0.05),but the content of BUN in groups Ⅱ,Ⅲ and Ⅳ were lower than those in group Ⅰ (P > 0.05).Thus,comprehensive nutrient digestion and metabolism,blood biochemical indicators of four of kinds diets in one-year-old Yili horse,the requirement of crude protein,digestible protein,metabolizable energy,digestible energy were 14.28,9.16 g/(kg·BW) and 1.74,1.41 MJ/(kg·BW),respectively.  相似文献

试验旨在研究4种日粮对1岁伊犁马消化代谢、血液生化指标的影响。选用平均体重为(227.38± 16.48)kg的1岁伊犁马16匹,随机分为2组,每组8匹,采用分期分组的试验方法,分别为试验Ⅰ、Ⅱ、Ⅲ、Ⅳ组。试验Ⅰ组每匹马饲喂苜蓿干草8 kg/d、颗粒精料0 kg/d;试验Ⅱ组每匹马饲喂苜蓿干草7 kg/d、颗粒精料1 kg/d;试验Ⅲ组每匹马饲喂苜蓿干草6.3 kg/d、颗粒精料1.7 kg/d;试验Ⅳ组每匹马饲喂苜蓿干草5.6 kg/d、颗粒精料2.4 kg/d。进行21 d的消化代谢试验,其中预试期15 d,正试期6 d。结果表明,1岁伊犁马对干物质、有机物、粗蛋白质、磷的消化率随日粮中颗粒精料水平的增加呈增长趋势,而中性洗涤纤维、酸性洗涤纤维、钙的消化率呈下降趋势;消化能、代谢能随日粮中颗粒精料水平的增加呈增长趋势(P > 0.05);氮沉积量、氮沉积率随日粮中颗粒精料水平的增加而增长,其中试验Ⅲ、Ⅳ组氮沉积量、氮沉积率极显著高于试验Ⅰ组(P < 0.01);钙沉积量、钙沉积率随日粮中颗粒精料水平的增加而降低,且试验Ⅰ组极显著高于试验Ⅱ、Ⅲ、Ⅳ组(P < 0.01);磷沉积量随日粮中颗粒精料水平的增加而极显著增加(P < 0.01);各组血浆中总蛋白含量差异不显著(P > 0.05),但试验Ⅱ、Ⅲ、Ⅳ组血浆尿素氮含量均低于试验Ⅰ组(P > 0.05)。综合1岁伊犁马对4种日粮的消化代谢情况及血液生化指标,1岁伊犁马粗蛋白质适宜需要量为14.28 g/kg代谢体重,可消化蛋白适宜需要量为9.16 g/kg代谢体重,代谢能适宜需要量为1.74 MJ/kg代谢体重,消化能适宜需要量为1.41 MJ/kg代谢体重。  相似文献

Soybean hulls have been used as a feed ingredient for horses for many years and are generally used as a fiber source. The NRC (11) gives them an energy value of 1.88 Mcal DE/kg DM, which is comparable with a medium quality grass hay. Recent evidence suggests that soybean hulls may have a higher energy value. Two feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the energy value of soybean hulls by using them to replace oats in a concentrate for weanling horses. In Exp. 1, 16 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse weanlings, 145.2 4.1 d of age, were paired within breed and gender subgroups and assigned at random to either the oats or soybean hull-based concentrate. Soybean hulls replaced oats at 25% of the concentrate. Concentrates were fed individually to appetite for two, 1.5-h feeding periods daily with the concentrate restricted to the lesser amount consumed by the pair based on percentage of BW. Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) hay (12.8% CP) was group fed at 1.0 kg/100 kg BW daily. The BW and measurements of the weanlings were made at 14-d intervals for 112 d, and the weanlings were radiographed for bone mineral deposition determinations at the start and conclusion of the study. Experiment 2 used 13 weanlings starting at 143.8 ± 4.2 d of age and was identical to Exp. 1 except the source of the Coastal bermudagrass hay was different and the concentrate intake was fed ad libitum during the two, 1.5-h feeding periods. In Exp. 1, no differences in feed or nutrient intake, BW, or body measurement gains were detected (P > 0.05) except for body length gain, which was greater for the weanlings on the oat-based concentrate (P < 0.05). The weanlings gained 0.73 and 0.70 kg/d on the oat and soybean hull-based concentrates, respectively. In Exp. 2, the protein content of the hay (7.0% CP) was less than the previous year, resulting in a protein intake below NRC (11) recommendations. No differences in BW, withers height, or body length gain were detected (P < 0.05), but heart girth (P < 0.05) and hip height gain (P < 0.05) were both greater for the weanlings fed the oat-based concentrate. The weanlings gained 0.74 and 0.61 kg/d on the oat and soybean hull-based concentrates, respectively. Bone mineral deposition was not different between diet groups for either experiment. Results suggest that soybean hulls have an energy value for weanling horses that is similar to oats when fed with medium quality grass hay. When fed with low quality grass hay, soybean hulls do not seem to be as valuable as oats, perhaps because of either the slow energy release or the availability of protein in the foregut.  相似文献

本试验旨在通过研究补喂支链氨基酸对速步马1 km速步赛成绩及赛前、赛后血浆抗氧化指标以及激素、肌酸、葡萄糖、乳酸、肌酐含量的影响,为支链氨基酸在速步马训练、比赛中的应用提供参考数据。试验选取年龄相近(4岁左右)、体重相近[(457±50)kg]并经过严格训练的伊犁马公马8匹(速步赛用马),随机分为2组,分别为对照组、试验组,每组4匹。每天每匹马分别饲喂3 kg颗粒精料,苜蓿干草自由采食,在此基础上试验组每天每匹马补喂72 g支链氨基酸(由35.0 g亮氨酸、16.6 g异亮氨基酸、20.4 g缬氨酸组成),进行为期38 d(预试期7 d,正试期31 d)的补饲试验及训练试验。结果表明:补喂支链氨基酸可提高速步马的比赛成绩,同时显著提高速步马赛后30 min血浆总抗氧化能力及赛后24 h血浆超氧化物歧化酶活力(P0.05),但对血浆中激素、肌酸、葡萄糖、乳酸、肌酐含量无显著影响(P0.05)。由此得出,补喂支链氨基酸可缩短速步马比赛用时,提高速步马机体的抗氧化能力,但对血浆中激素、葡萄糖、肌酸、乳酸、肌酐含量无显著影响。  相似文献

The effects of meal frequency and fasting on selected plasma free amino acids (PFAA) was studied in horses. Six 22-mo-old Quarter Horses were used in a replicated 3 X 3 Latin-square design in which each horse received one meal per day (1M), two meals per day (2M) or six meals per day (6M) for 2 wk. A complete pelleted ration was fed at a rate of 1.75% of body weight daily. The consumption of a meal by the horses fed 1M and 2M daily was followed by an increase (P less than .05) in plasma methionine. The highest levels were observed at 5 h and 3 h in the 1M and 2M treatments, respectively. The horses receiving the larger meal (1M) also had higher methionine levels. There were no significant changes in plasma methionine levels in the 6M group. Feed was withheld from the 1M group for 48 h and blood samples were obtained for alanine, glutamine, glutamate, lysine and leucine levels. These amino acids also peaked at 5 h, then declined through 19 to 25 h. During the last 24 h PFAA levels increased (P less than .05). Although glutamine and lysine appeared to level off at 49 h after the meal, alanine, glutamate and leucine were still increasing.  相似文献

Few data are available on post-prandial changes of plasma amino acids (AAs) in horses and on the repeatability and the individual variance on different sampling days. The objective of the present study was to measure pre- and post-prandial concentrations of plasma AA in 10 yearling horses. Blood samples were taken on days 1 and 40 of the study before feeding of hay, oats and soya meal and over an 8 h post-prandial period in 2-h intervals. The plasma AAs were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography after ortho-phthalaldehyde derivatization. Mean fasting concentrations of the AAs were not significantly influenced by the individuum and sampling day. Repeatability of the fasting AA levels in the individual horses on two different sampling days was only found for histidine, 3-methylhistidine, methionine, tryptophan and taurine. While the absolute post-prandial AA concentrations differed between sampling days, the relative changes were comparable. All AA concentrations except 3-methylhistidine increased after feeding by 13% to more than 200% of their fasting values if the combined data of both days were analysed. Four hours after feeding the concentrations of arginine, asparagine, lysine, leucine, isoleucine and threonine, decreased more than 20%. Histidine, methionine, phenylalanine, valine, tryptophan, glutamine, glycine, tyrosine and taurine concentrations decreased by less than 20%. Concentrations of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, ornithine, serine and citrulline remained elevated. Most AA approached the fasting concentrations at 8 h, only glycine increased between 6 and 8 h after meal and 3-methyl-histidine concentrations were constant throughout the entire period. In conclusion, the pre-prandial plasma AA in horses appeared less influenced by individuum or sampling day than post-prandial plasma AA concentrations. Therefore, plasma AA concentrations should be interpreted only under well-defined conditions, especially regarding the feeding regimen.  相似文献

Eight pregnant Thoroughbred mares were randomly allotted to 2 diets, 4 weeks prior to their anticipated dates of foaling. The diets consisted of 30% timothy hay, 20% alfalfa hay, 17.5% whole corn, 17.5% oats, 9% barley, 2.5% molasses, 2.5% soybean mean and 1% calcium carbonate, with or without 20 g/day of a commercial yeast culture preparation. The digestibilities of dietary energy, crude protein, hemicellulose, cellulose and phosphorus were significantly greater in the supplemented mares. The supplemented mares produced 12% more milk during the third week of lactation (p<.01), and their milk contained more energy, sugars, lipids, protein and amino acids per 100 g. Consequently, their foals ingested more of these nutrients per day. The digestibilities of milk energy, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus were not affected by yeast culture supplementation. However, because of their increased nutrient intakes the foals of the supplemented mares retained 19.6 g more nitrogen (p<.01), 2.1 g more phosphorus (P<.01) and 0.9 g more calcium (p<.05).  相似文献

A 5‐week experiment with 24 multiparous early lactating Brown Swiss cows was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementary rumen‐protected methionine in conjunction with dietary protein reduction on metabolism and performance after 1 week of control measurement. Three rations containing 175, 150 and 125 g of crude protein/kg feed dry matter were supplemented with methionine. The fourth ration, also only containing 125 g of crude protein/kg dry matter, remained unsupplemented. The four treatment groups had a similar metabolic supply of other essential amino acids, protein and energy, as calculated by various approaches. The two low protein rations were, however, slightly deficient in ruminally degraded protein. Treatment effects remained low on feed intake, forage meal pattern, milk yield and fat as well as lactose content. In contrast, the content and yield of milk protein significantly declined only in the unsupplemented low protein ration relative to the initial value. Compared with this ration, the decline in milk protein yield was clearly delayed in the supplemented low protein ration. Blood plasma methionine tended to be reduced without supplementation and to be increased with additional methionine. Supplementation of methionine reduced other plasma amino acids. Plasma insulin, glucose, lactate, ketone bodies and aspartate amino transferase activity indicated a certain liver stress and a somewhat elevated energy requirement with high and particularly with low protein content (when unsupplemented). Methionine improved metabolic protein utilization, followed by the lowest plasma, urine and milk urea levels in the supplemented low protein diet. In conclusion, no major adverse effects were assessed under the conditions tested. Supplementation of methionine may nevertheless be useful in rations with particularly low protein content fed to early lactating cows in order to prevent negative long‐term effects which were only visible here as trends.  相似文献

Four multiparous Holstein cows were fed a basal diet balanced with the Cornell Net Protein and Carbohydrate System (CNCPS). Diets were formulated to be co-limiting in intestinally absorbable supplies of methionine, lysine, and isoleucine. Cows were supplemented with no amino acids (control); lysine and methionine in a ruminally protected form; isoleucine by abomasal infusion; or lysine, methionine, and isoleucine in a 4x4 Latin square arrangement of treatments with 28-d periods. Performance of cows on all treatments was lower than expected due to low intake of DM that could have been caused by the high fiber level of the basal diet. This high fiber level was likely responsible for the high daily chewing times for cows fed all diets, which was consistent with the high ruminal pH values. Intake of DM and its components were not influenced by any treatment. Milk protein percentage tended to be higher when cows were fed diets supplemented with ruminally protected lysine and methionine; however, production of milk, milk fat, and milk lactose were not affected by any treatment. Cows tended to have a higher milk lactose proportion and tended to produce more milk and milk lactose when they were abomasally infused with isoleucine alone. However, when cows were supplemented with all three amino acids, milk production and composition did not differ from that of cows fed the unsupplemented diet. Use of the CNCPS to evaluate the performance of the cows fed the unsupplemented diet suggested that these cows may have been colimited by intestinally absorbable supplies of lysine, isoleucine, and methionine in addition to metabolizable protein. Evaluation of the unsupplemented diet with an alternate model, Shield, suggested that cows fed the unsupplemented diet may have been colimited by intestinally absorbable supplies of lysine, isoleucine, and arginine. Results suggest that enhanced delivery of intestinally absorbable isoleucine may stimulate milk lactose synthesis.  相似文献

试验旨在研究日粮中添加酵母或酵母代谢物产品对奶牛生产性能的影响。选择70 头中国荷斯坦泌乳奶牛,按产奶量、泌乳天数和胎次等情况配对分成7组,每组10 头,其中试验1组为对照组,其余6组为试验组。对照组饲喂基础日粮,该日粮主要包含20 kg青贮、3 kg干草、2 kg苜蓿干草和9 kg泌乳期奶牛精料补充料。试验组在饲喂基础日粮的基础上再分别添加60 g益生素酵母1、50 g益生素酵母2、10 g益生素酵母3、10 g益生素酵母4、15 g益生素酵母5和15 g益生素酵母6。试验期为50 d,其中预试期10 d,正试期40 d。结果表明,不同的酵母或酵母代谢物产品对奶牛产奶量和奶成分有不同程度的影响,添加益生素酵母2试验组奶牛的产奶量与对照组相比增加显著( P<0.05)。不同的酵母及酵母代谢物产品对牛乳成分也有不同程度的影响,益生素酵母1、益生素酵母2和益生素酵母3显著提高了牛奶中乳脂含量(P<0.05);益生素酵母4显著提高了牛奶中蛋白含量(P<0.05);不同酵母或酵母代谢物产品对牛奶中干物质含量无显著影响;在体细胞数方面,添加益生素酵母2、益生素酵母3和益生素酵母4的试验组牛奶中体细胞数有一定的降低,但差异不显著(P>0.05)。因此,本试验证明饲料中添加酵母及酵母代谢物能提高奶牛的生产性能。  相似文献

Growth and clinical biochemistry were examined over 30 wk in 42 light horse weanlings fed high-forage diets (73 to 77% alfalfa) or high-concentrate diets (63 to 65% grain and grain by-products) that were either low (.24 to .35%), normal (.68%) or high (.95 to 1.06%) in P. Body weights and blood samples were taken every 2 wk. Forage and concentrate diets contained 2.65 and 3.09 Mcal digestible energy/kg DM, respectively. Calcium and P digestibilities were highest (P less than .01) in those horses fed the low P diets, but only horses fed forage-low P diets may have absorbed insufficient P. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity, serum Ca, serum Mg and plasma Cu concentrations were unaffected by diet but varied (P less than .01) among sampling periods. The concentrations of serum Ca and P of all groups fluctuated to wk 10 before being stabilized at means of 2.77 and 2.03 mmol/liter, respectively. Plasma Zn concentrations increased quadratically with age and were 3.8% greater (P less than .05) for concentrate-fed horses than for forage-fed horses. Mild to moderate physitis and flexure limb deformities occurred in 88% of the weanlings principally between wk 6 and 8 of the study. Limb deformities had largely resolved by wk 12. Marginally deficient P intakes did not alter productivity, feed intake, blood mineral concentration in the final 20 wk or the occurrence of musculoskeletal abnormalities in weanling horses.  相似文献

Eight weanling Standardbred horses were used to evaluate the effects on growth and plasma glucose of two differently processed diets with identical ingredients fed at a rate of 3% of body weight, as fed, daily. The daily ration was divided into two equal feedings at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. The hay and grain diet (diet HG) consisted of 50% alfalfa hay cubes and 50% of a commercial growing horse texturized grain mix fed as is, without any further processing, with each part fed in separate containers. The completely pelleted diet (diet P) consisted of the same proportions of the hay cubes and grain mix that was ground, pelleted, and fed in a single container. Two groups of four horses were fed either diet P or diet HG for two 21-day periods such that each horse consumed each diet for 21 days. On the last day of each feeding period, 7-mL blood samples were drawn into heparinized evacuated blood tubes for determination of plasma glucose concentration. Blood samples were drawn 30 minutes before the afternoon feeding, immediately before, and every 30 minutes thereafter for 5 hours. Analysis of variance found greater (P = .027) average daily gain for horses fed diet P versus diet HG. A nonsignificant difference was seen in feed efficiency (P = .057) for horses fed diet P versus diet HG. Plasma glucose changes were compared across treatments using area under the curve analysis. No difference (P > .05) was found in the postprandial plasma glucose changes between diet treatments.  相似文献

Insulin resistance has been suggested to increase the risk of certain diseases, including osteochondrosis and laminitis. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of adaptation to high-glycemic meals on glucose-insulin regulation in healthy Thoroughbred weanlings. Twelve Thoroughbred foals were raised on pasture and supplemented twice daily with a feed high in either sugar and starch (SS; 49% nonstructural carbohydrates, 21% NDF, 3% crude fat on a DM basis) or fat and fiber (FF; 12% nonstructural carbohydrates, 44% NDF, 10% crude fat on a DM basis). As weanlings (age 199 +/- 5 d; BW 274 +/- 5 kg) the subjects underwent a modified frequently sampled i.v. glucose tolerance test. A series of 39 blood samples was collected from -60 to 360 min, with a glucose bolus of 300 mg/kg BW injected at 0 min and an insulin bolus of 1.5 mIU/kg BW at 20 min. All samples were analyzed for glucose and insulin, and basal samples also were analyzed for plasma cortisol, triglyceride, and IGF-I. The minimal model of glucose and insulin dynamics was used to determine insulin sensitivity (SI), glucose effectiveness, acute insulin response to glucose (AIRg), and disposition index (DI). Insulin sensitivity was 37% less (P = 0.007) in weanlings fed SS than in those fed FF; however, DI did not differ (P = 0.65) between diets because AIRg tended to be negatively correlated with SI (r = -0.55; P = 0.067). This finding indicates that the SI decrease was compensated by AIRg in the weanlings adapted to SS. This compensation was further demonstrated by greater insulin concentrations in SS-adapted weanlings compared with FF-adapted weanlings at 11 of 36 sample points (P < 0.055) and greater (P = 0.040) total area under the insulin curve in SS than in FF weanlings. Plasma cortisol and triglycerides did not differ between dietary groups, but IGF-I was greater (P = 0.001) in SS weanlings. Despite appearing healthy, horses adapted to high-glycemic feeds may exhibit changes in altered insulin sensitivity and compensation that increase the risk of diseases involving insulin resistance. Thirty, 19-week-old Quarter Horses were utilized in a 112-d study to compare growth, nutrient utilization and post prandial thyroid hormone concentrations in weanling horses fed fat-supplemented or conventional diets. Concentrates were formulated to contain the same nutrient-calorie ratios and were fed with Coastal Bermuda grass hay in a 70:30 concentrate:hay ratio. Initially and at 28-d intervals the horses were weighed and measured for height, heart girth circumfer ence and subcutaneous fat thickness over the rump and ribs. Radiographs were taken of the right carpal and metacarpal phalangealjoints at the beginning and end of the experimental period for evaluation of bone density and physeal maturation. A digestion trial was conducted on each horse 10 d prior to completion of the study. On d 70, blood samples were col lected from 6 females in each treatment group over a 6-h collection period for evaluation of postprandial insulin, T4 and T3 concentrations in response to the diets. Horses in both groups consumed an average of 2.6% of body weight daily of total feed (Dry Matter). Weanlings consuming the fat-supplemented concentrate tended to have higher (P = .10) average daily weight gains (.80 vs .74 kg) and lower (P<.05) feed:gain ratios (6.3 vs 7.3) than weanlings fed the control diet. Gain in heart girth circumference was greater (P<.05) for the fat fed weanlings (20.1 cm) than the control weanlings (17.9 cm). All other linear measurements of growth were similar between treatments. There were no radiographic indications of abnormalities in the physes of horses on either treatment. Closure of the physes occurred at normal rates in foals on both treatments. Radiographic bone density was not different between treatments, and there was an expected increase in bone density in weanlings on both treatments over time. Digestibilities of protein and energy were similar between treatments, while ether extract and neutral detergent fiber digestibilities were higher (P<.05 and P<.06, respec tively) in those horses consuming the fat-supplemented diet (65.39 vs 57.67% and40.55 vs 35.62%, respectively). These data indicate that fat can be used as an energy source to support growth and development in weanling horses.  相似文献
