Two field studies examined the calving patterns of cows in seasonal dairy herds in the Waikato (Field Study 1) and South Taranaki regions (Field Study 2). The first study examined patterns for cows commencing their second or subsequent lactation in herds which had used an inseminating service during the previous season. The second study included first lactation heifers only in 15 herds where animals had been naturally mated, and in 15 herds in which they had been synchronised and then artificially inseminated at the synchronised oestrus. The parameters describing calving patterns were based on the date for each herd's planned start of calving (PSC), which was 282 days from the date on which breeding commenced in the preceding season. The average interval from PSC to mean calving date for the 35 herds in Field Study 1 was 22 days, with individual herds ranging from 15 to 30 days. In herds with heifers which had been naturally mated (Field Study 2), it was 17.6 days compared to 11.0 days for previously synchronised animals. Calculating the intervals from PSC to median calving date and separately for the last two quartiles more effectively described a herd's calving pattern. The duration for the last quartile of the calving pattern was influenced by the extent and timing of induced calving. In Field Study 1, 88.6% of the 35 herd owners induced premature parturition in at least one cow. In these herds, 11.3% of cows were treated and calved prematurely. Only 61.7% of heifers which had previously been naturally mated calved by 3 weeks after PSC. Their calving dates were not evenly distributed over this 3-week period, with 9.8% in the first week and 25.6% in the third week. The calving pattern for heifers which had been previously synchronised showed several distinct peaks. Calvings to the synchronised mating were completed 15 days after PSC, by which time 64.7% of animals had calved. By 3 weeks after PSC, 72.9% of these heifers had calved. The results showed that there was considerable variation in calving patterns in seasonal dairy herds. This variation would have been due to differences in conception pattern, and the way induced calving had been applied. The calving pattern in heifers which had been naturally mated was less concentrated than had been expected. Synchronisation can significantly concentrate the calving pattern of these first lactation animals. The parameters used to describe calving patterns may be less applicable in herds in which a high proportion of animals is induced to calve prematurely, or where a whole herd is synchronised. We investigated the influence of calving difficulty on dry matter intake (DMI) in Holstein cows immediately after calving using 15 pregnant heifers and 15 multiparous cows. DMI was measured for 6 days after calving. Calving difficulty was evaluated with a calving score, and urinary cortisol was measured. The calving score was higher in the first lactation heifers than in the multiparous cows. The average DMI 6 days after calving was lower in the first lactation heifers than in the multiparous cows. The urinary cortisol concentration at 4 days after calving was higher in the first lactation heifers than in the multiparous cows and was positively associated with the calving score. The DMI was negatively associated with the calving score and the urinary cortisol concentration at 4 days after calving and was positively associated with the average milk yield 6 days after calving and the serum calcium concentration at 3 days after calving. We conclude that DMI immediately after calving is influenced not only by nutrient requirements of cows but also stress derived from calving, and the low DMI in the first lactation heifers is due to the lower energy requirement and high susceptibility to the stress compared with multiparous cows.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of parity number on the dry matter intake (DMI) of cows during the first week after calving. Eighty‐three cows were evaluated from 14 days before to 7 days after calving. DMI and milk yield were measured for 7 days after calving, and the calving score was measured. Blood samples were collected throughout the experiment. The average DMI during the first week after calving was reduced in the first‐lactation heifers and high‐parity number cows. A quadratic relationship between the parity number and the DMI was observed. The first‐lactation heifers had lower prepartum serum total protein (TP) concentration and milk yield, higher prepartum serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentration and calving score than the multiparous cows. The recovery rate of serum calcium (Ca) after calving was slow in the cows in the parity 6. The DMI was positively affected by the serum Ca concentration after calving, milk yield, and prepartum serum TP concentration and was negatively affected by the calving score and prepartum serum NEFA concentration. We conclude that the DMI immediately after calving tends to be lower in first‐lactation heifers and high‐parity number cows, but factors that reduce the DMI differ according to parity number.  相似文献

The effects of early initiation of first service for dairy heifers on their fertility and productivity up to the third lactation were examined under constant raising and management conditions. Eight Holstein heifers in their early breeding regimens and eight Holstein heifers in their late breeding regimens were initiated to be bred at 12 and 15 months of age, respectively, and were first calved at 21.5 and 25.1 months of age, respectively, with bodyweights of 563 and 638 kg after calving, respectively. Early first breeding resulted in a lower bodyweight and a lower body condition score, but it did not affect the fertility or milk production during the first lactation of heifers as cows. The calving intervals of cows to the second and third calving were similar in early and late bred heifers. Although the early bred heifers had a significantly lower fat‐corrected milk yield at the second lactation than that of the late bred heifers, early breeding did not impair the productivity indicated by the mean milk yield per day from birth to the end of the third lactation with a shorter production period.  相似文献

A clinical trial was conducted to determine whether prepartum intramammary pirlimycin reduces the proportion of nulliparous heifers with intramammary infection (IMI) during early lactation and improves milk production. Quarter milk samples were collected from 428 heifers, systematically allocated to treatment and control groups, 6 to 12 d before the expected calving date and 2 to 8 d after calving. At the prepartum visit, heifers in the treatment group (n = 219) received an infusion of pirlimycin hydrochloride in all 4 quarters; the control heifers (n = 209) received no infusions. Intramammary infection was detected in 69% of the heifers and 33% of the quarters before calving. After calving, the proportion of treated heifers with IMI was significantly lower than the proportion of control heifers (31% versus 45%). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 10% of the heifers and 3% of the quarters before calving. After calving, the proportion of IMIs due to S. aureus was significantly lower in the treated heifers than in the control heifers (5.6% versus 10%). Antibiotic treatment increased the percentage of cures and prevented new IMIs caused by gram-positive bacteria after calving. The incidence of new IMIs caused by gram-negative bacteria and yeast was higher among treated heifers than among control heifers. There was no overall effect of treatment on milk production, but there was a significant interaction effect of treatment and the interval between treatment and calving. An increase of 302 kg of milk was observed when antibiotic treatment was applied more than 1 wk before calving. Treatment did not affect the milk somatic cell count on the 1st 3 test days after calving.  相似文献

Measurements were made of sole haemorrhages and white line lesions in two groups of heifers which were either introduced to a cubicle house four weeks before they calved (group 1) or housed in a straw yard for eight weeks after calving and then moved into the cubicle house (group 2). The overall severity of the lesions was described by a cumulative score which defined the product of the severity and the area of the overall lesions in each animal. The lesions were scored on six occasions, from four weeks before to 24 weeks after parturition. Before parturition, sole lesions were absent or very small. By four weeks after calving, most of the animals had both types of lesion, but the differences between the two groups were small and statistically insignificant. There were no significant differences in the white line lesions between the two groups at any of the observations. There were, however, progressive, highly significant differences between the two groups in the severity of sole haemorrhages. By 12 weeks after calving, the median score for group 1 was 69 and that for group 2 was 11. In group 2, the sole haemorrhage score peaked at eight weeks but declined thereafter, even though these animals were moved into cubicles eight weeks after calving. By 12 weeks after calving, six of the 17 heifers in group 1 had sole ulcers but none of the 16 in group 2 had ulcers.  相似文献

Heifers managed under pastoral conditions are at risk from Streptococcus uberis mastitis infections at calving. A total of 397 heifers from six farms around New Zealand were enrolled in a study to identify and enumerate S. uberis on teat-ends of heifers in the peri-partum period, and to understand the effect of teat-spraying in the pre-calving period on the prevalence and incidence of S. uberis mastitis post-calving. Heifers were randomly assigned to Control or Sprayed groups. Sprayed heifers were teat-sprayed once, three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) with a commercial iodine-based teat sanitizer, starting at 3 weeks prior to calving and ending at day of calving. Across three farms, all glands of cows in both groups were sampled at calving to determine S. uberis intra-mammary infection (IMI) prevalence. For all farms, clinical mastitis (CM) cases detected during the week after calving were sampled and submitted for bacteriological analysis. Swabbing of teat-ends of 54 heifers from one farm showed that heifers had a pre-existing S. uberis contamination averaging 610 colony-forming units per swab (cfu/swab), at 3 weeks prior to calving. At calving, teat-end contamination was 560 cfu/swab for Sprayed heifers and 1775 cfu/swab for Control heifers. Two weeks after calving, teat-end contamination was similar between both groups, at 30 cfu/swab. The prevalence of S. uberis IMI was significantly lower in the Sprayed (3.5% glands) vs. the Control (7.4%) heifers in the first week after calving. There was a trend for Sprayed heifers (3.6% heifers) to have a lower incidence of S. uberis CM compared with Control heifers (7.4% heifers). It is concluded that teat-spraying in the dry period is a management option that could contribute to controlling heifer S. uberis mastitis in the transition period.  相似文献

Thyroxine (T4) and cholesterol concentrations and their dynamic changes and differences were studied in 20 pregnant heifers 10 days before calving until 56 days after calving. Ten control heifers were fed the feed ration for pregnant heifers according to Czechoslovak Standard CSN 46 7070. The feed ration given to another ten (experimental) heifers was fortified with 300 mg of synthetic beta-carotene per head/day within the period of five months before insemination, during pregnancy and till the 56th day after parturition. As suggested by the regression function of straight line, no obvious differences were recorded in the dynamic changes of T4 before parturition and during the first days after parturition. T4 concentrations had a generally descending tendency in both groups, the lowest values being recorded in the 48th hour in the experimental group and the 24th hour in the control. A marked increase of T4 concentrations with the values significantly higher in the control group than in the experimental group was observed between the 21st and 35th day after calving. A medium increase of cholesterol concentrations was found in the heifers given rations fortified with beta-carotene. No significant differences in cholesterol concentrations were observed between the two groups, except in the 72nd hour and the seventh day. Significant T4: cholesterol correlations were recorded in the experimental animals in the first and second hours, on the 42nd day (P less than 0.05), and in the 72nd hour (P less than 0.001); in the control group these observations were made the seventh day before calving and in the sixth hour and on the 14th, 21st and 56th days (P less than 0.05) after calving. It is inferred from the results that beta-carotene interferes with the activity of the thyroid gland and the production of its hormones, and that the increases or decreases of the activity of this gland, caused by beta-carotene, influence the metabolism of cholesterol in the body.  相似文献

Five experiments involving 1,244 cows and heifers were carried out to investigate the factors which might influence the calving performance to fixed-time artificial insemination following intravaginal administration of progesterone (PRID) and intramuscular injection of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). Factors examined were duration of PRID treatment, time of treatment after calving, time and dose PMSG and lactational status. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 were carried out on milked Friesian cows, experiment 4 on Friesian heifers and experiment 5 on suckled and dry Herefords. All cows were inseminated once with frozen/thawed semen 54 to 58 h or 46 to 50 h after completion of PRID treatment. Overall there was a progressive increase in calving rates with an increase in the duration of treatment from 12 to 14 to 16 days but there was little or no effect of time after calving (4 v 7 weeks) at which treatment was commenced. The poorer calving performance of cows treated for 12 to 14 days was associated with relatively high peripheral levels of plasma progesterone at the time of the PRID removal, suggesting the presence at the end of treatment of residual secretory luteal tissue. There was an effect on calving performance of PMSG given at the time of PRID removal but its effect varied according to the duration of PRID treatment. After 12 days treatments (experiments 1 and 5) PMSG had little effect, whereas after 14 days treatments, 0, 500 and 750 IU PMSG gave calving rates of 27%, 40% and 46% in experiment 2 and 5%, 24% and 38% in experiment 5.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

During the peripartum period, high-yielding dairy cows experience metabolic stress, which alters their homeostasis and exposes the cows to illness. The aim of this study was to quantify the expression levels of genes involved in antioxidant defences during the transition period in the blood of dairy cows and to evaluate the regulative activity on these genes of natural antioxidants in the diet. Three groups of 7 heifers each, at the 7th month of pregnancy, were used. Starting from 3 weeks before the expected calving date (–22 days), the three groups were allotted to the following experimental treatments: control (CTR, basal diet); lycopene (LYC, basal diet + lycopene 540 mg/day) and grape polyphenols (POL, basal diet + grape polyphenols 10 g/day). Blood was sampled at 22 and 8 days before and 8, 15 and 22 after calving and analysed for the expression level of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (Cu/ZnSOD) using the real-time PCR technique with LUX (Light Upon eXtension) fluorogenic primers. During the peripartum period (–22 days until + 22 days from calving), Cu/ ZnSOD mRNA expression decreased (p<0.05) in the CTR and LYC groups, but increased at 15 days after calving in the POL group. No significant differences were found in GPx mRNA expression. The results suggest that grape polyphenols may have a controlling effect on peripartum metabolic stress through modulation of superoxide dismutase expression.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of mastitis among primiparous heifers at calving and at drying off in 11 Waikato dairy herds during the 1993-94 dairy production season. Duplicate quarter milk samples were collected aseptically from 458 heifers within 5 days after calving for bacteriological analysis. Mastitis was diagnosed in at least one quarter in 35.6% of these heifers. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from 21.8% of the heifers. The prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococci varied between herds from 4.3% to 44.8%. Environmental streptococci caused mastitis in 12.2% of heifers, ranging from 5.6% to 24.1% between herds. Streptococcus uberus was the pathogen identified most frequently at calving and accounted for more than 90% of the streptococcal isolates. Staphylococcus aureus and coliforms were isolated from less than 1% of samples. Clinical mastitis was observed in 8.1% of heifers at calving; environmental streptococci were isolated from 67.6% of these clinical clinical cases. Only 2.8% of heifers developed clinical mastitis during lactation and environmental streptococci were isolated from 38.5% of these cases. The prevalence of mastitis among 428 of the heifers at drying off was 64.7%; a 1.8 fold increase during lactation. Corynebactetium bovis was isolated from 43% of heifers at drying off even though it was not isolated from any heifers at calving. During the season, the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis increased to 2.8% while mastitis caused by environmental streptococci declined to 2.8%. The prevalence of environmental mastitis pathogens decreased during lactation while contagious pathogens increased in each of the 11 herds. Ineffective post-milking teat sanitation probably contributed to the increase in mastitis caused by contagious pathogens. Specific factors were not determined that affected the variation in prevalence between herds.  相似文献

Relative date of first calving of beef heifers was studied in relation to production efficiency and subsequent reproductive performance. Crossbred heifers were managed in a drylot environment for 1 yr with feed intake measured through weaning of the first calf. Mean heifer age at entry into drylot was 572 d. Production traits were evaluated by calving group (CG), where CG1 included records of heifers calving (and calves born) in the first 21 d of the calving season for a particular year, CG2 included those calving from 22 through 42 d and CG3 included those calving after 42 d. Calving groups did not differ significantly for preweaning calf ADG, but weaning age differences resulted in heavier weaning weights for CG1 compared with CG2 and CG3. An earlier relative calving date was associated with increased cumulative feed energy intake of heifers and their calves during the 1-yr test period. In terms of production efficiency, the weaning weight advantage of earlier calving was offset only partly by the increased feed energy intake of the dam-calf unit, resulting in 6.3 Mcal (12.4%) less ME per kg calf weaning weight for CG1 vs CG3 for the 1-yr period. Within a limited calving season, earlier calving dams tended to be biologically and economically more efficient because a greater proportion of their annual production cycle was in a productive (lactating) mode, diluting maintenance costs as a fraction of all costs. Heifers in CG1 also tended to calve earlier than CG3 heifers for the second calf. Calving interval was a biased measure under the management conditions of a limited breeding season and culling of open cows.  相似文献

Mycoplasma bovigenitalium (M. bovigenitalium, strain AL) was inoculated by insemination during estrous into the uterus or the cervix of 12 heifers. The inoculum consisted of a mixture of M. bovigenitalium (strain AL) and diluted semen taken from a highly fertile bull free of mycoplasma infection. Mycoplasma organisms were recovered 3 days postinoculation (PI) from the vaginal mucous of eight of 12 inoculated heifers, and at weekly intervals thereafter until the time of necropsy. All inoculated heifers had granular vulvovaginitis; some also had mucopurulent vaginal discharges. Six of the 12 infected heifers were inseminated more than once, yet none became pregnant. Macroscopic changes observed at necropsy in the genital tracts, in addition to granular vulvovaginitis, consisted of mucopurulent discharges emananting from the uterus, cervix, and vagina. All ovaries had corpora lutea. Mycoplasmas were recovered at necropsy from eight of the 12 heifers. Isolations were made from the vaginal wall, cervix, uterus, right and left oviducts, and the ovaries. All recovered mycoplasms were identified as M. bovigenitalium. It was concluded that M. bovigenitalium (strain AL) can cause inflammatory changes and infertility in heifers.  相似文献

Mastitis in primiparous heifers immediately postpartum can be both a significant welfare concern and a heavy economic loss. Interventions successfully researched include intramammary therapies. This study considered the clinical and practical effects of a parenteral approach to controlling clinical mastitis in heifers immediately postpartum. The objective of this field trial was to determine whether preventative treatment of heifers with a single parenteral treatment of 15 million iu micronised procaine penicillin within 12h after calving would reduce the incidence of clinical mastitis in early lactation as detected by farmers. All heifers (n=609) calving on three commercial dairy farms in New Zealand during the spring of 2006 were randomly allocated to either treatment or no treatment. Treatment (15 million iu micronised procaine penicillin) was given at the first milking following calving. All clinical mastitis was recorded. Treatment reduced the odds of having clinical mastitis within the first 7 days in milk by over half (Mantel-Haenszel adjusted OR=0.456; p=0.044); and reduced the odds of having mastitis within the first 100 days in milk by just under half (Mantel-Haenszel adjusted OR=0.518; p=0.027). Treatment had a significant effect on increasing the median days to clinical mastitis (p=0.019; beta=1.961, LCI 1.117, UCI 3.445). Preventative treatment of heifers immediately following calving with 15 million iu micronised procaine penicillin parenterally could be of benefit as part of a control programme aimed at reducing the incidence of clinical mastitis in heifers in their first lactation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of an inactivated bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) vaccine to protect against BHV-1 challenge-induced abortion and stillbirth. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 35 beef heifers. PROCEDURES: Before breeding, heifers were vaccinated with a commercially available BHV-1 inactivated vaccine SC or IM. The estrous cycle was then synchronized, and heifers were artificially inseminated 30 to 60 days after vaccination. Heifers (n = 21) were challenge inoculated IV at approximately 180 days of gestation with virulent BHV-1. Fourteen control heifers were not vaccinated. Clinical signs of BHV-1 infection were monitored for 10 days following challenge; serologic status and occurrence of abortion or stillbirth were evaluated until time of calving. RESULTS: 18 of 21 (85.7%) heifers that received vaccine were protected from abortion following challenge, whereas all 14 control heifers aborted. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that an inactivated BHV-1 vaccine can protect against abortion resulting from a substantial challenge infection, with efficacy similar to that of modified-live BHV-1 vaccines.  相似文献

Staphylococcus aureus, is the most frequently isolated pathogen from cases of bovine mastitis. Vaccination against S. aureus seems to be a rational approach for the control of staphylococcal mastitis. In the present work we evaluate the response of heifers vaccinated with a S. aureus avirulent mutant to the intramammary challenge with a S. aureus virulent strain. Clinical signs, production of milk, shedding of S. aureus cells, somatic cell count (SCC) and antigen-specific IgG in blood and milk, were determined. Two subcutaneous doses of a culture of the mutant, used as vaccine, was administered to four pregnant heifers 30 and 10 days before calving. The vaccinated heifers and four non-vaccinated were challenged 10 days after calving with the homologous virulent S. aureus strain, which was inoculated by intramammary route into two quarters of each animal. No local tissue damage was observed due to the administration of the vaccine. A significantly increase of specific IgG to S. aureus RC122 was detected in blood and milk of vaccinate heifers as well as a slight increase in daily milk yield during the trial. No significant difference on shedding of bacteria in milk and SCC were found among groups. In conclusion, vaccination of heifers before calving by an avirulent mutant vaccine of S. aureus, induced specific and significant antibody responses and provide better post-challenge conditions in vaccinated heifers.  相似文献

A 3-yr study was conducted with spring-born heifers (n = 240) to determine the effects of developing heifers to either 55 or 60% of mature BW at breeding on reproduction and calf production responses. A concurrent study was also conducted with summer-born heifers (n = 146) to examine effects of breeding heifers with the mature cow herd or 1 mo earlier on reproduction and calf production variables. Spring-born crossbred heifer calves were weaned and developed on two different levels of nutrition to achieve the desired prebreeding BW. Summer-born heifers were developed to similar target breeding BW (60% of mature BW) to begin calving either 1 mo before (May) or at the same time as the mature cowherd (June). Blood samples were taken before breeding to determine differences in estrous cyclicity. Pregnancy rates through the fourth pregnancy were determined. Cow and calf production variables were evaluated through the third gestation. Spring-born heifers reached 53 or 58% of mature BW at breeding and had similar reproduction and first calf production traits between the two, groups. Calving difficulty with the second calf was greater (P < 0.05) for heifers developed to 58% of mature BW at breeding. Subsequent second calf weaning weight and ADG were decreased (P < 0.05) for heifers developed to 58% of mature BW at breeding. Feed costs were $22/heifer less for heifers developed to 53% of mature BW. Summer-born first-calf heifers calving in June had less (P < 0.01) calving difficulty than did heifers calving in May; however, calf birth weights were similar. Breeding summer-born heifers 1 mo before the cowherd did not influence pregnancy rates over three calf crops; however, first calf adjusted weaning weights and ADG were greater for calves born earlier. Development costs were $11/heifer more for heifers developed to calve in May vs. June. Developing spring-born heifers to 53% of mature BW did not adversely affect reproduction or calf production traits compared with developing heifers to 58% of mature BW, and it decreased development costs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations of lactation, somatic cell count score (SCCS) at breeding, milk yield, lactation number, interval from calving to breeding (days open), number of times inseminated, and season of breeding on fetal loss for lactating Holstein females (both first-parity and multiparous cows) and nonlactating Holstein heifers in a hot climate. Females were palpated between d 40 and 50 of gestation and again at d 70 to 80 to determine pregnancy status. Early fetal loss was defined as a loss that occurred after d 40 to 50 but before d 70 to 80. Mid-to-late fetal loss represented losses after d 70 to 80 but before expected calving. Lactating females had higher early (P = 0.055) and mid-to-late fetal loss (P < 0.05) than nonlactating heifers. Those lactating females with increased days open experienced greater early (P < 0.05) and mid-to-late fetal loss (P = 0.055), whereas lactating females with an elevated SCCS encountered greater mid-to-late fetal loss (P < 0.01). Milk yield, lactation number, number of times inseminated, and season were not associated with early or mid-to-late fetal loss. For nonlactating heifers, there were no associations between number of times inseminated, season, or age at breeding on early or mid-to-late fetal loss. In conclusion, lactating females were more likely to suffer early and mid-to-late fetal loss than nonlactating heifers. Also, days open and SCCS at breeding were related to ability of lactating females to maintain pregnancy, but there were no relationships between fetal loss and milk yield, lactation number, number of times inseminated, or season.  相似文献

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) isolates are classified into 3 subtypes by use of restriction endonuclease analysis. Isolates from aborted fetuses have been either subtype 1 or 2a, whereas subtype 2b viruses have not been associated with abortion. We assessed the abortifacient property of isolates representing each of the 3 BHV-1 subtypes by IV inoculation of heifers with the virus 25 to 27 weeks after breeding. Three heifers were given Cooper (subtype 1) isolate, 3 heifers were given FI (subtype 2a) isolate, and 5 heifers were given K22 (subtype 2b) isolate. All heifers developed fever and viremia 2 to 5 days after inoculation. Heifers given Cooper or FI isolate aborted between 17 and 85 days after inoculation. The 5 heifers given K22 isolate delivered full-term calves. Placenta was obtained from 4 of the 5 heifers, and K22 virus was isolated from each placenta. Four calves had BHV-1 neutralizing antibody in precolostral serum, with titer ranging from 1:4 to 1:512.  相似文献
