Abstract

Analytical interference in the colorimetric determinations of ammonium and nitrate was examined in various KCl extracts of several ion exchange resins. No analytical interference was found in the colorimetric NO3 ‐N determination in any extract of any resin. However, a mixed‐bed (cation + anion) exchange resin extract substantially affected the colorimetric determination of NH4 ‐N. Recovery of adsorbed ammonium and nitrate from ion exchange resins was also studied as a function of KCl extractant strength and number of extractions. The recovery of adsorbed NO3 ‐N in the first extraction increased with increasing KCl concentration, with a 2 M solution recovering about 80%. However, a 1 M KCl solution gave the greatest recovery of ammonium‐N, recovering about 75–80% of the adsorbed ammonium. The second extraction with the same concentration of KCl solution was greater with the 0.5 and 2.0 M than with the 1 M solution so that total NH4 +‐N recovery after two extractions was about the same for all three KCl concentrations. The recovery of resin‐adsorbed NH4 +‐N and NO3 ‐N appeared independent of their concentrations on the resins.  相似文献

Abstract

Mixtures of cation and anion exchange resins are used as part of the resin core technique to determine nitrogen transformation in forest soils as they adsorb the NH4‐N and NO3‐N from soil solution percolating through the incubated soil cores. In the field, the exchange resins may be subjected to a variety of conditions, involving drying, rehydration, freezing, and thawing. This paper examines how these processes affect adsorption of NH4‐N and NO3‐N and the stability of the resins. Lab tests were performed on the anion resin Amberlite IRA‐93, the cation resin Amberlite IR‐120, a mixture of IRA‐93 and IR‐120, and the commercially‐mixed bed resin Amberlite MB1. The background content of NO3‐N and NH4‐N on the resins was large and highly variable between different batches of resins in spite of a 2 M NaCl pre‐rinse. The IR‐120 cation resin that was subjected to 48 hours air‐drying contained significantly less NH4‐N than the moist resins, while the drying of the IRA‐93 anion resin caused a significant release of NO3‐N from resins with no N addition. Although the variation was large, the mixed bed resin MB1 indicated a release of NH4‐N, which supports results from long term in situ deployments. A reduced adsorption of NO3‐N was found on the IRA‐93 anion resins and the MB1 mixed bed resins that were dried prior to N addition while the dry IR‐120 cation resins adsorbec significantly less NH4‐N than the control resin. No effect of freezing and thawing efficiency was observed on resin stability or N adsorption efficiency. Sufficient blanks that have been subjected to similar moisture changes are necessary in N limited systems with low levels of available NH4‐N and NO3‐N.  相似文献

Abstract

The attribute that ion‐exchange resins remove ions from solutions moving through them can be used to measure nitrate transport through soils. The characteristics of nitrate adsorption by resins must be known to interpret nitrate accumulation on ion‐exchange resins embedded in soil. The extent to which anion exchange resins retain NO3‐ from soil leachate was measured in 15.9 cm diam.by 60 cm long intact cores of Nolin (fine silty mixed mesic Dystric Fluventic Eutrochroept) soil. A NC3 ‐selective resin and a non‐selective resin were tested. Columns were fertilized at a rate of 300 kg N/ha and 150 kg Br/ha and leached with 50 cm of water. Under these conditions, both resins retained approximately 80% of the NO3‐ and Br leached through the soil. This compared with greater than 95% retention in laboratory columns containing only resin. The difference in retention was attributed to different flow through the resin associated with the method of resin emplacement.  相似文献

Samples were collected from 13 upland sites (main inflow and loch outflow) in the UK along an N deposition gradient of 12-50 kg ha-1 yr-1 to determine the relationship between N deposition and NO3 - concentrations in surface waters. There was no direct correlation between NO3 - leaching and soluble inorganic N deposition at these sites, but a significant relationship with NO3 - was found using a deposition function incorporating dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux from each catchment. A similar but less significant relationship was found between NO3 - concentration and DOC:DON ratio in runoff water. Catchments showed evidence of N saturation, i.e., when mean NO3 - concentration exceeded 5 µeq L-1, when the mean DOC:DON ratio fell below an approximate value of 25. Five other large loch sites (LLS) with multiple subcatchments were used to test these relationships and for four of these mostly heathland sites the predicted NO3 - concentrations closely matched measured values. At the fifth site, where most subcatchments were forested, the deposition function and DOC:DON ratios gave conflicting predictions and both methods generally underestimated measured NO3 - concentrations. If the capacity of these catchments to retain deposited N is determined by C supply then many upland catchments in the UK may experience increasing NO3 - concentrations in runoff in the future at current or increased levels of N deposition.  相似文献

Nitrate leaching from intensively and extensively grazed grassland measured with suction cup samplers and sampling of soil mineral‐N II Variability of NO3 and NH4 values and degree of accuracy of the measurement methods Data from a grazing experiment — comparison of mean values, see Anger et al. (2002) — were used to estimate within‐field variability to asses the accuracy of two frequently used methods of estimating NO3 leaching on pastures: (1) the ceramic suction cup sampling (with 34 cups ha—1 minimum, calculated climatic water balance, 4 leaching periods) and (2) using the soil mineral‐N method (vertical soil NO3 and NH4 content in 0—0.9 m (Nmin) measured at the beginning and end of two winters on a minimum of 10 different areas of 50 m2 each with a minimum of 7 different sample cores). These methods were used on two permanent pastures with high mean stocking density of cattle of 4.9 LU ha—1 on 1.3 ha with N‐fertilization of 250 kg N ha—1 (= intensive [I]) and 2.9 LU without N fertilization on a 2.2 ha pasture (= extensive [E]). The results show that NO3 leaching on pastures was largely due to few selectively extremely high NO3 amounts under a few excrement spots — mainly urine spots — which would not be sampled representatively with an acceptable effort in a conventional grazing experiment. In both grazing treatments, very large spatial variation occurred. This was greater between the different suction cups than between the compound mineral N samples of each area. Therefore, a marked skewness and kurtosis demonstrated a non‐normal distribution of samples from suction cups, while mineral N values did not show this effect consistently. Sampling selected mostly spots without noticeable influence of excrement, but a few samples with very high values identified evidently urine spots from summer or autumn grazing. The differences in mean coefficient of variation (CV) between the grazing treatments and estimation methods were mainly based on the stocking rate and the density of excrement spots. CV values were 131 % [I] / 242 % [E] for NO3 leaching measured with suction cup samplers and of 71 % [I] / 116 % [E] for soil NO3 values and 24 % [I] / 34 % [E] for soil NH4 values in 0—0.9 m according Nmin‐method. Results of the Nmin method are obviously inaccurate even with a sampling intensity much greater than 70 cores ha—1; and so making an estimation of NO3 leaching by this method is unsatisfactory for pastures. Compared to this, the results of suction cup sampling are more convincing; but even with a tolerated deviation of ± 20 % from the empirically estimated average and with a 95 %‐confidence interval, the calculated mean minimum number of samples in our experiment should be increased to 146 and 265 suction cups ha—1 for the intensively and extensively grazed treatments, respectively. This requirement would be prohibitive for many field experiments.  相似文献

Nitrate leaching from intensively and extensively grazed grassland measured with suction cup samplers and sampling of soil mineral‐N I Influence of pasture management Leaching of nitrate (NO3) from two differently managed cattle pastures was determined over four winters between 1993 and 1997 using ceramic suction cup samplers (with min. 34 cups ha—1); additionally, vertical soil mineral‐N content in 0—0.9 m (Nmin) was measured at the beginning and end of two winters (with min. 70 different sample cores ha—1). The experimental site in the highlands north‐east of Cologne, Germany, is characterized by high annual precipitation (av. 1,362 mm between 1993 and 1996). An intensive continuous grazing management (1.3 ha, fertilized with 250 kg N ha—1 yr—1, average stocking density 4.9 LU ha—1, = [I]) was tested against an extensive continuous grazing system (2.2 ha, av. 2.9 LU ha—1; no N‐fertilizer but an estimated proportion of Trifolium repens up to 15 % of total dry matter in the final year, = [E]). The results can be summarized as follows: (1) Mean leaching losses of NO3‐N, estimated from suction cup sampling and balance of drainage volume, were 85 kg NO3‐N ha—1 [I] and 15 kg NO3‐N ha—1 [E] during three wet winters with drainage volumes between 399 and 890 mm; in a dry winter with 105 mm calculated percolation, nitrate leaching decreased by a factor of 5 for both grazing treatments. (2) Although the amount of mineral N in soil (Nmin) sampled in late autumn showed differences between intensive and extensive grazing, the Nmin method permits no certain indication of the risk of NO3 leaching. For example, during the winter period 1994/95 a reduction of mineral N in the soil (0—0.9 m) in both grazing treatments was found (—33 [I] / —8 [E] kg NO3‐N ha—1 and —26 [I] / —21 [E] kg NH4‐N ha—1) whereas during the winter 1996/97 an increase in almost all mean mineral N values occurred (+10 [I] / +2 [E] kg NO3‐N ha—1 and +10 [I] / —10 [E] kg NH4‐N ha—1). (3) In spite of the differences between both methods, the experiment shows that NO3‐N leaching under extensive grazing could be reduced almost to levels close to those under mown grassland.  相似文献

Nitrate (NO3?) can contribute to surface water eutrophication and is deemed harmful to human health if present at high concentrations in the drinking water. In grazed grassland, most of the NO3?‐N leaching occurs from animal urine‐N returns. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a nitrification inhibitor, dicyandiamide (DCD), in decreasing NO3? leaching in three different soils from different regions of New Zealand under two different rainfall conditions (1260 mm and 2145 mm p.a.), and explore the relationships between NO3?‐N leaching loss and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA). The DCD nitrification inhibitor was found to be highly effective in decreasing NO3?‐N leaching losses from all three soils under both rainfall conditions. Total NO3?‐N leaching losses from the urine patch areas were decreased from 67.7–457.0 kg NO3?‐N/ha to 29.7–257.4 kg NO3?‐N/ha by the DCD treatment, giving an average decrease of 59%. The total NO3?‐N leaching losses were not significantly affected by the two different rainfall treatments. The total NO3?‐N leaching loss was significantly related to the amoA gene copy numbers of the AOB DNA and to nitrification rate in the soil but not to that of the AOA. These results suggest that the DCD nitrification inhibitor is highly effective in decreasing NO3? leaching under these different soil and rainfall conditions and that the amount of NO3?‐N leached is mainly related to the growth of the AOB population in the nitrogen rich urine patch soils of grazed grassland.  相似文献

Abstract

The relationships between nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in surface flooding water and those in the leachate of various soil depths were monitored, and temporal variation of leaching losses of N and P from a paddy plot during rice cultivation was estimated under the conditions of southern Korea. Even flooded conditions nitrification in subsurface soil was identified, but nitrate concentrations in leachate were less than 10 mg/L, the standard drinking water nitrate concentration set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The NO3‐N and ortho‐P concentrations in the leachate were generally higher than those in the surface flooding water. Field data implied that leaching losses would not be accurately estimated under the flooded conditions of the paddy field when using the N and P concentrations of surface flooding water and infiltration depth. The leaching losses of NO3‐N from paddy fields were high immediately after fertilization. The study results suggested that proper fertilization and irrigation strategies are required to reduce leaching losses of NO3‐N from paddy fields.  相似文献

There is an urgent need to improve the methods to estimate solute fluxes in soil, e.g. cumulative capture of leaching ions by exchange resin cores. We compared the suitability of different resin materials, core sizes, and installation procedures to assess nutrient leaching in a highly permeable, tropical Xanthic Ferralsol. Three different cation and anion resins, respectively, and two combined anion-cation resins were tested in laboratory experiments with respect to their removal and recovery of nutrients (Mg, NH4+, NO3) and total dissolved organic carbon (TOC) from solution. In a field experiment, cores with three different diameters (25, 100, and 200 mm) were installed either vertically from the soil surface or laterally from a soil pit. Cumulative leaching of NO3 and NH4+ and of applied Sr was determined after 45 days. The combined anion and cation exchange resin (MB 20) showed satisfactory recovery of NO3 and NH4+ from solution. None of the investigated resins could be used for TOC removal from solution due to high contents of soluble carbon compounds in the resins. Wetting and drying cycles did not affect the removal of solutes from solution or subsequent recovery from the MB 20 resin. Additionally, the combined resin MB 20 was easier to handle than separate anion or cation resins and was therefore used for further field experimentation. The smallest core size (25 mm) was not suitable for nutrient leaching determination due to high preferential flow along the inner core walls. The medium diameter cores (100 mm) showed the lowest variability and the best correlation between NO3 and Sr capture. They were easier to install and retrieve than the large diameter cores (200 mm), which posed serious handling problems and soil disturbance. The lateral installation caused significantly lower artificial flow in comparison to a vertical installation, which was shown by the lower Sr loss and slightly lower N capture. Therefore, a lateral installation of medium sized resin cores (100 mm diameter) from a soil pit was superior to the other alternatives tested in this study.  相似文献

The sequestration of carbon in soil is not completely understood, and quantitative information about the rates of soil organic carbon (SOC) turnover could improve understanding. We analyzed the effects of the uneven distribution of crop residues after harvest of silage maize on C and N losses (CO2‐C, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), and NO3) from a Haplic Phaeozem and on the occurrence of priming effects induced by the decomposition of accumulated maize residues. Soil columns were taken from a continuous maize (since 1961) field after harvest i) between maize stalk rows (Mbare), ii) within the maize rows including a standing maize stalk (Mstalk), and iii) from a continuous rye (since 1878) field after tillage (rye stalk and roots were mixed into the Ap horizon). The soil columns were incubated for 230 days at 8 °C with an irrigation rate of 2 mm 10–2 M CaCl2 per day. Natural 13C abundance was used to distinguish between maize‐derived C (in SOC and maize residues) and older C originating from former C3 vegetation. The uneven distribution of maize residues resulted in a considerably increased heterotrophic activity within the maize rows as compared with soil between seed rows. Cumulative CO2 production was 53.1 g CO2‐C m–2 for Mstalk and 23.3 g CO2‐C m–2 for Mbare. The contribution of maize‐derived C to the total CO2 emission was 83 % (Mstalk) and 67 % (Mbare). Calculated as difference between CO2‐C release from Mstalk and Mbare, 19 % of the maize residues (roots and stalk) in Mstalk were mineralized during the incubation period. There was no or only a marginal effect of the accumulation of maize residues in Mstalk on leaching of DOC, DON, and NO3. Total DOC and DON leaching amounted to 2.5 g C m–2 and 0.16 g N m–2 for Mstalk and to 2.1 g C m–2 and 0.12 g N m–2 for Mbare. The contribution of maize‐derived C to DOC leaching was about 25 % for Mstalk and Mbare. Nitrate leaching amounted to 3.9 g NO3‐N m–2 for Mstalk and to 3.5 g NO3‐N m–2 for Mbare. There was no priming effect induced by the decomposition of fresh maize residues with respect to CO2 or DOC production from indigenous soil organic carbon derived from C3 vegetation.  相似文献

Information about the mineralization rate of compost at various temperatures is a precondition to optimize mineral N fertilization and to minimize N losses in compost‐amended soils. Objectives were to quantify the influence of the temperature on the mineralization rate and leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), NO3, and NH4+ from a fresh (C : N = 15.4) and a mature (C : N = 9.2) organic household waste compost. Compost samples were mixed with quartz sand to ensure aerobic conditions, incubated at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25°C and irrigated weekly for 112 days. For the fresh compost, cumulative CO2 evolution after 112 days ranged from 36% of the initial C content at 5°C to 54% at 25°C. The CO2 evolution was only small in the experiments with mature compost (1 to 6% of the initial C content). The data were described satisfactorily by a combined first‐order (fresh compost) or a first‐order kinetic model (mature compost). For the fresh compost, cumulative DOC production was negatively related to the temperature, probably due to leaching of some of the partly metabolized easily degradable fractions at lower temperatures. The production ratios of DOC : CO2‐C decreased with increasing temperature from 0.094 at 5°C to 0.038 at 25°C for the fresh and from 1.55 at 5°C to 0.26 at 25°C for the mature compost. In the experiments with fresh compost, net release of NO3 occurred after a time lag which depended on the temperature. Cumulative net release of NO3 after 112 days ranged from 1.8% of the initial N content at 5°C to 14.3% at 25°C. Approximately 10% of the initial N content of the mature compost was released as NO3 after 14 days at all temperatures. The DOC : DON ratios in the experiments using fresh compost ranged from 11.5 to 15.7 and no temperature dependency was observed. For the mature compost, DOC : DON ratios were slightly smaller (7.4 to 8.9). The DON : (NH4+ + NO3) ratio decreased with increasing temperature from 0.91 at 5°C to 0.19 at 25°C for the fresh compost and from 0.21 at 5°C to 0.12 at 25°C for the mature compost. The results of the dynamics of C and N mineralization of fresh and mature compost can be used to assess the appropriate application (timing and amount) of compost to soils.  相似文献

Field experiments over a 3 y period were conducted in a winter wheat‐maize double‐cropping system at the Dongbeiwang Experimental Station, Beijing, China. Three different treatments of irrigation (sprinkler “suboptimal” and “optimized”; conventional flood irrigation) and N fertilization (none, according to Nmin soil tests, conventional) were studied with respect to effects on soil water balance, nitrate leaching, and grain yield. Under sprinkler irrigation, evaporation losses were higher due to a more frequent water application. On the other hand, in this treatment nitrate leaching was smaller as compared to flood irrigation, where abundant seepage fluxes >10 mm d–1 along preferential flow paths occurred. For quantifying nitrate leaching, passive samplers filled with ion‐exchange resins appeared to be better suited than a method which combined measurements of suction‐cup concentrations with model‐based soil water fluxes. As a result of the more balanced percolation regime (compared to that under conventional flood irrigation), there was a tendency of higher salt load of the soil solution in the rooting zone. Given a seepage rate of 50 mm, a winter wheat grain production of 5–6 t ha–1 required a total water addition of about 430 mm. Fertilizer treatments >100 kg N ha–1 did not result in any additional yield increase. An even balance between withdrawing and recharge of groundwater cannot be achieved with “optimized” irrigation, but with a reduction of evapotranspiration losses, adapted cropping systems, and/or by tapping water resources from reservoirs in more distant areas with surpluses.  相似文献

The effects of various measures introduced to increase nitrogen (N)‐use efficiency and reduce N losses to water in a 6‐yr crop rotation (winter wheat, spring barley, green manure, winter wheat, spring barley, spring oilseed rape) were examined with respect to N leaching, soil mineral N (SMN) accumulation and grain yield. An N‐use efficient system (NUE) with delayed tillage until late autumn and spring, direct drilling of winter wheat, earlier sowing of winter and spring crops and use of a catch crop in winter wheat was compared with a conventional system (CON) in a field experiment with six separately tile‐drained plots in south‐western Sweden during the period 1999–2011 (two crop rotation cycles). Total leaching of NO3‐N from the NUE system was significantly 46 and 33% lower than in the CON system during the first and second crop rotation cycle, respectively, with the most pronounced differences apparently related to management strategies for winter wheat. Differences in NO3‐N leaching largely reflected differences in SMN during autumn and winter. There was a tendency for lower yields in the NUE system, probably due to problems with couch grass. Overall, the measures for conserving N, when frequently used within a crop rotation, effectively reduced NO3 concentrations in drainage water and NO3‐N leaching losses, without severely affecting yield.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) balance method is a valuable tool for estimating N losses. However, this technique could lead to incorrect estimates of the amount of nitrate (NO3?N) leaching if processes relevant to N losses are not considered properly. The aim of this study was to compare NO3?-N leaching losses estimated using an N balance (nonrecovered N, Nne) with data of NO3?-N leaching losses (Nl). The experiment was made on a Typic Argiudoll soil planted with corn (five growing seasons) under 0, 100, and 200 kg N ha?1. The ceramic soil-water suction samplers were installed (1 m deep). Drainage was estimated by the LEACH-W model. The greatest overestimation with the N balance method occurred for years with annual rainfall below the historical average and at times of high NO3?-N availability. Future research should focus on investigating mechanisms of N losses relevant under limited water availability.  相似文献

Abstract

We compared the use of mixed-bed ion exchange resin capsules (RC), suction cups (SC), pan lysimeters (PL), and subsurface drainage (DR) for the detection of nitrate movement through a clayey soil where onion (Allium cepa L.) had been cultivated over a period of seven months. At the topsoil level, solutions collected with SC showed higher concentrations of NO3 ? than the PL-collected samples. At 80-cm depth, however, the concentrations of NO3 ? were higher for the DR and PL samples than for the SC samples, suggesting that bypass or macropore flow was the primary mechanism of NO3 ? transport to subsurface drainage or groundwater, while solutions collected by SC mostly represented solutions inside soil aggregates. The use of the resin capsule method resulted in higher values of NO3 ? at 15- than at 50-cm depth initially but the trend was reversed after sufficient leaching and plant uptake. High and significant correlations were obtained between the amount of NO3 ? adsorbed on RC at 15-cm depth and the mean concentration of NO3 ? in the DR samples during the RC installation period and between the NO3 ? adsorbed on RC at 50-cm depth and the mean NO3 ? concentration of PL samples at 80-cm depth. Such results indicate that the RC method which enables the detection of nitrate transport via macropore flow is a promising technique for nitrate leaching measurements.  相似文献

Abstract

Application of soluble forms of nitrogen (N) fertilizers to sandy soils may cause leaching of nitrate N (NO3‐N) resulting in contamination of groundwater. The leaching loss of N may be reduced to a certain extent by the use of controlled‐release N formulations. A leaching column study was conducted to evaluate the leaching of urea, ammonium N (NH4‐N), and NO3‐N forms from selected urea‐based controlled‐release formulations (Meister, Osmocote, and Poly‐S) and uncoated urea under eight cycles of intermittent leaching and dry conditions. Following leaching of 1,760 mL of water (equivalent to 40 cm rainfall) through the soil columns, the recovery of total N (sum of all forms) in the leachate accounted for 28, 12, 6, or 5% of the total N applied as urea, Poly‐S, Meister, and Osmocote, respectively. Loss of urea‐N from all fertilizer sources was pronounced during the initial leaching events (with the exception of Meister). Cumulative leaching of urea‐N was 10% for uncoated urea while <1.7% for the controlled‐release formulations. Cumulative leaching of NH4‐N was 6.2% for uncoated urea while <0.5% for the controlled‐release formulations. Cumulative leaching loss of NO3‐N was 3.78% for Osmocote, 4.6% for Meister, 10.4% for urea, and 10.5% for Poly‐S. This study demonstrates a significant reduction in leaching of N forms from controlled‐release formulations as compared to that from the soluble form.  相似文献

Outwintering beef cattle on woodchip corrals offers stock management, economic and welfare benefits when compared with overwintering in open fields or indoors. A trial was set up on a loamy sand over sand soil to evaluate the pollution risks from corrals and the effect of design features (size and depth of woodchips, stocking density, and feeding on or off the corral). Plastic‐lined drainage trenches at 9–10 m spacing under the woodchips allowed sampling of the leachate. Sampling of the soil to 3.6 m below the corral allowed evaluation of pollutant mitigation during vadose zone transport. Mean corral leachate pollutant concentrations were 443–1056 mg NH4‐N L?1, 372–1078 mg dissolved organic carbon (DOC) L?1, 3–13 mg NO3‐N L?1, 8 × 104–1.0 × 106Escherichia coli 100 mL?1 and 2.8 × 102–1.4 × 103 faecal enterococci 100 mL?1. Little influence of design features could be observed. DOC, NH4 and (in most cases) E. coli and faecal enterococci concentrations decreased 102–103 fold when compared with corral leachate during transport to 3.6 m but there were some cores where faecal enterococci concentrations remained high throughout the profile. Travel times of pollutants (39–113 days) were estimated assuming vertical percolation, piston displacement at field moisture content and no adsorption. This allowed decay/die‐off kinetics in the soil to be estimated (0.009–0.044 day?1 for DOC, 0.014–0.045 day?1 for E. coli and 0–0.022 day?1 for faecal enterococci). The mean [NO3‐N] in pore water from the soil cores (n = 3 per corral) ranged from 114 ± 52 to 404 ± 54 mg NO3‐N L?1, when compared with 59 ± 15 mg NO3‐N L?1 from a field overwintering area and 47 ± 40 mg NO3‐N L?1 under a permanent feeding area. However, modelling suggested that denitrification losses in the soil profile increased with stocking density so nitrate leaching losses per animal may be smaller under corrals than for other overwintering methods. Nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane fluxes (measured on one occasion from one corral) were 5–110 g N ha?1 day?1, 3–23 kg C ha?1 day?1, and 5–340 g C ha?1 day?1 respectively. Ammonia content of air extracted from above the woodchips was 0.7–3.5 mg NH4‐N m?3.  相似文献

Abstract. In dairy farming systems the risk of nitrate leaching is increased by mixed rotations (pasture/arable) and the use of organic manure. We investigated the effect of four organic farming systems with different livestock densities and different types of organic manure on crop yields, nitrate leaching and N balance in an organic dairy/crop rotation (barley–grass-clover–grass-clover–barley/pea–winter wheat–fodder beet) from 1994 to 1998. Nitrate concentrations in soil water extracted by ceramic suction cups ranged from below 1 mg NO3-N l?1 in 1st year grass-clover to 20–50 mg NO3-N l?1 in the winter following barley/pea and winter wheat. Peaks of high nitrate concentrations were observed in 2nd year grass-clover, probably due to urination by grazing cattle. Nitrate leaching was affected by climatic conditions (drainage volume), livestock density and time since ploughing in of grass-clover. No difference in nitrate leaching was observed between the use of slurry alone and farmyard manure from deep litter housing in combination with slurry. Increasing the total-N input to the rotation by 40 kg N ha?1 year?1 (from 0.9 to 1.4 livestock units ha?1) only increased leaching by 6 kg NO3-N ha?1. Nitrate leaching was highest in the second winter (after winter wheat) following ploughing in of the grass-clover (61 kg NO3-N ha?1). Leaching losses were lowest in 1st year grass-clover (20 kg NO3-N ha?1). Averaged over the four years, nitrate concentration in drainage water was 57 mg l?1. Minimizing leaching losses requires improved utilization of organic N accumulated in grazed grass-clover pastures. The N balance for the crop rotation as a whole indicated that accumulation of N in soil organic matter in the fields of these systems was small.  相似文献

Denitrification in subsoil(to a depth of 12 m) is an important mechanism to reduce nitrate(NO_3~-) leaching into groundwater. However, regulating mechanisms of subsoil denitrification, especially those in the deep subsoil beneath the crop root zone, have not been well documented. In this study, soil columns of 0–12 m depth were collected from intensively farmed fields in the North China Plain. The fields had received long-term nitrogen(N) fertilizer inputs at 0(N0), 200(N200) and 600(N600) kg N ha~(-1) year~(-1). Main soil properties related to denitrification, i.e., soil water content, NO_3~-, dissolved organic carbon(DOC), soil organic carbon(SOC),pH, denitrifying enzyme activity(DEA), and anaerobic denitrification rate(ADR), were determined. Statistical comparisons among the treatments were performed. The results showed that NO_3~- was more heavily accumulated in the entire soil profile of the N600 treatment, compared to the N0 and N200 treatments. The SOC, DOC, and ADR decreased with increasing soil depth in all treatments, whereas considerable DEA was observed throughout the subsoil. The long-term fertilizer rates affected ADR only in the upper 4 m soil layers. The ADRs in the N200 and N600 treatments were significantly correlated with DOC. Multiple regression analysis indicated that DOC rather than DEA was the key factor regulating denitrification beneath the root zone. Additional research is required to determine if carbon addition into subsoil can be a promising approach to enhance NO_3~- denitrification in the subsoil and consequently to mitigate groundwater NO_3~- contamination in the intensive farmlands.  相似文献
