The growth of the heart, relative to body weight, was measured by M-mode echocardiography in dogs during the first year of life. Echocardiographic measurements were obtained from 16 English Pointers at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of age and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. Left atrial (LA), aortic (AO), left and right ventricular internal dimensions, interventricular septal and left ventricular wall thickness measurements increased in curvilinear fashion relative to increasing body weight. Least-squares regression analysis, performed on logarithmically transformed data, was used to develop power-law equations describing the relationship of echocardiographic measurements to body weight. Linear dimensions of the LA, AO, left and right ventricular internal dimensions and interventricular septal and left ventricular wall thickness changed proportionally to slightly differing exponential powers of body weight (BW), varying from 0.31 to 0.45 (BW0.31 to BW0.45). Fractional shortening and the LA to AO ratio decreased slightly, but significantly, as body weight increased. Indexing echocardiographic measurements to BW1/3 was more appropriate than indexing such measures linearly to body weight, offering a practical method for developing accurate normative graphs or tables for M-mode echocardiographic dimensions in growing dogs.  相似文献

Three different operators with varying levels of experience made repeated echocardiographic measurements of the aortic root diameter, interventricular septal thickness, left ventricular internal diameter, and left ventricular free wall thickness of 25 horses using a 3.5 MHz transducer. Each operator followed specific guidelines in order to determine the reproducibility (inter-operator variation) and repeatability (intra-operator variation) of their measurements. Variations due to horse differences, operator differences, and horse by operator interactions were determined. The largest variation was due to differences between horses. Inter-operator-based variability was only significant with respect to interventricular septal and aortic root measurements. All other measurements were reproducible and repeatable when obtained by well-trained operators. The experience of operators affects reproducibility and repeatability, however. It was concluded that different operators could apply equine M-mode echocardiography to obtain measurements of ventricular chamber and free wall dimensions that can be legitimately compared to measurements obtained by others if operators are adequately trained and landmarks are clearly standardized.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes over time in echocardiographic measurements in young Standardbred racehorses undergoing training and racing and determine whether there was any relationship between cardiac dimensions and racing performance. DESIGN: Longitudinal observational study. ANIMALS: 103 horses. PROCEDURE: 2-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography was performed 4 times at 6-month intervals. RESULTS: Significant cardiac enlargement took place during the study period as indicated by increases in left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (LVIDd), estimated left ventricular muscle mass (LV mass), and mean wall thickness attributable to eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy. Estimated body weight was positively correlated with left ventricular size, and males had significantly larger LVIDd and LV mass than did females. Horses that were racing regularly had larger LVIDd and LV mass than did unraced horses. A significant relationship between left ventricular size and racing performance was observed. The relationship was strongest at the time of the fourth examination. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that age must be taken into account when interpreting results of echocardiography in young Standardbred racehorses because significant cardiac enlargement takes place with age and training. A larger heart was found in horses that were racing, and size of the heart was correlated with athletic performance of the horse.  相似文献

30 warmblood horses were examined before and after sedation with 20 micrograms/kg BW detomidine, to determine changes of cardiac function parameters, using B-mode, M-mode and Doppler echocardiography. 15 horses showed a heart murmur, but no clinical signs of cardiac heart failure, 15 horses had neither a heart murmur nor other signs of cardiac disease. After sedation with detomidine we could recognise a significant increase of end-diastolic left atrium diameter, an increase of end-systolic left ventricular diameter and aortic root diameter. The end-systolic thickness of papillary muscle and interventricular septum showed a decrease. Fractional shortening and amplitude of left ventricular wall motion was decreased after sedation. The mitral valve echogram revealed a presystolic valve closure and an inflection in the Ac slope (B-notch) in xy horses before sedation. Both increased after sedation with detomidine. Doppler echocardiography showed a decrease of blood flow velocity and velocity time integral (VTI) in the left and right ventricular outflow tract after sedation. Regurgitant flow signals were intensified following sedation in xy horses, especially at the mitral valve.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of combined atropine low-dose dobutamine stress test on left ventricular parameters in adult warmblood horses, to establish a potential protocol for pharmacological stress echocardiography. Seven healthy untrained warmblood horses aged 9 to 22 years were used. Heart rate (HR) and left ventricular B- and M-mode dimensions were recorded at baseline and during stress testing with 35 microg/kg atropine IV followed by incremental dobutamine infusion of 2 to 6 microg/kg/min. HR increased significantly (P < .05) during the pharmacological challenge, and a maximal HR of 156.6 +/- 12.5 bpm was reached at maximal dobutamine infusion rate. Systolic and diastolic interventricular septum thickness, systolic and diastolic left ventricular free wall thickness, and fractional shortening increased significantly and reached a maximum at the highest infusion rate (mean +/- SD: 4.51 +/- 0.27 versus 5.65 +/- 0.31 cm, 2.89 +/- 0.19 versus 3.78 +/- 0.10 cm, 3.72 +/- 0.34 versus 4.77 +/- 0.18 cm, 2.44 +/- 0.28 versus 3.11 +/- 0.34 cm, 34.98 +/- 3.82 versus 50.56 +/- 3.42%, respectively). Systolic and diastolic left ventricular internal diameter decreased significantly during dobutamine infusion. Left ventricular external and internal area were significantly lower at a dobutamine infusion rate of 2 microg/kg/min but no further decrease was observed during the subsequent steps. Systolic and diastolic myocardial area was significantly lower after the administration of dobutamine but not significantly different during dobutamine infusion, when compared to baseline values. This pharmacological stress test induced significant changes in left ventricular echocardiographic parameters in adult warmblood horses. Additional research should evaluate the value of this stress test in horses suffering from cardiac disease.  相似文献

There are few physiologic studies that substantiate thepopular belief that mules are superior to horses as working animals. The purpose of this study was to compare selected cardiac dimensions and right-sided cardiac pressures of mules and horses. Using 2-D real time and M-mode echocardiography and transjugular cardiac catheterization resting cardiac dimensions and right-sided pressures were recorded from 10 adult mules and 10 adult horses. The mules and horses were similar in size and physical condition, and both groups had served equally as pack animals. The end diastolic left ventricular lumen diameter, interventricular septal thickness, left ventricular free wall thickness, and aortic root diameter measured (mean ± SD) 9.51 ±0.92 cm, 2.63±0.34 cm, 2.28±0.31 cm, 7.9±0.57 cm, respectively, in mules, and 9.83±0.87 cm, 2.83±0.29 cm, 2.39±0.33 cm, 7.9±0.36 cm, respectively, in horses. The end systolic left ventricular lumen diameter measured 5.79 cm in mules and 5.94±0.99 cm in horses, yielding left ventricular luminal shortening fractions of 39.2±7.15% in mules and 39.7±6.91% in horses. Right atrial mean pressure was 5.3±2.3 mm of Hg in mules and 5.8±1.2 mm Hg in horses. Right ventricular peak systolic pressure was 47.9±4.9 mm Hg in mules and 47.7±3.5 mm Hg in horses. Pulmonary artery mean pressure was 27.3±3.2 mm Hg in mules and 28.1±3.6 mm Hg in horses. No significant differences were detected between mules and horses for the resting cardiac dimensions examined or right-sided pressures measured.  相似文献

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine comparability of left ventricular (LV) M-mode echocardiographic indices derived from right parasternal long-axis and short-axis imaging planes. In 104 dogs (37 healthy dogs and 67 dogs with heart disease), LV M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from both long-axis and short-axis views and interventricular septum thickness (IVS), left ventricular internal dimensions (LVD), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPW), and LV shortening fraction (FS) were measured. Statistical analysis included paired t-test and graphical analysis to assess agreement between the two methods of data acquisition. Mean LVD in systole and diastole and mean IVS in systole were significantly (P<0.001) larger when measured from short-axis recordings compared to long-axis measurements. An increased magnitude of measurement resulted in increased differences between the methods for LV dimensions and fractional shortening. Differences between the two methods were small and within clinically acceptable limits in normal dogs. However, in 23 (34%) of the dogs with cardiac abnormality, one or more LV M-mode derived dimension obtained from one imaging plane did not agree sufficiently closely with the same measure from the other plane. Only for measurement of FS was there good agreement between methods in dogs with cardiac disease. Therefore, with the exception of FS, data gained from LV short-axis and long-axis M-mode recordings should not be used interchangeably in dogs with cardiac disease.  相似文献

We studied, by means of echocardiography in vivo, the cardiac consequences of the double-muscled character selection in beef cattle. Morphologic and functional echocardiographic variables were regularly estimated in 17 Friesian and 8 Belgian White and Blue calves during their growth. A total of 50 and 44 sets of data were collected in each group, respectively. Recordings were obtained, using 2-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography, and included measurements in long- and short-axis views of the heart. Most of the diastolic measurements of the left ventricle were not significantly different between breeds when normalized for body weight. To the contrary, systolic measurements of left ventricular wall thickness and dimensions were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) lower and greater, respectively, in Belgian White and Blue calves than in Friesian calves. This was interpreted as a result of significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) lower left ventricular systolic functional indices in Belgian White and Blue than in Friesian calves. Echocardiographic evidence that the double-muscled selection in cattle induces alteration in morphologic variables of left ventricle was not found. However, results indicate that indices of left ventricular systolic function are lower in double-muscled calves than in calves with standard conformation.  相似文献

Two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) was performed on 22 unsedated Thoroughbred and part Thoroughbred horses weighing between 411 and 650 kg to establish normal reference values for 2DE measurements. Animals stood during examinations performed with a 3.5 MHz mechanical sector transducer using various transducer positions and tomographic planes. Right ventricular diameter (RVD), ventricular septal thickness (VSTh), aortic diameter (AoD), area of the chordal lumen of the left ventricle (CTA), left ventricular diameter (LVD) and left atrial diameter (LAD) were determined at ventricular end-diastole (Ed) and/or end-systole (Es). Fractional shortening (FS) of the left ventricle and end-systolic left atrial to aortic ratio (LAD-Es:AoD-Es) also were calculated. Echocardiographic data were related to body weight by linear regression analysis. Intra-observer variability was checked in five horses by measuring each parameter during each of 10 consecutive cardiac cycles. The 2DE data were compared with M-mode values in published reports. In the 18 horses whose weight did not exceed 551 kg, repeatable recordings of good quality were obtained, and 2DE measurements could be made using intra-cardiac reference points. Increasing body weight proved to impose substantial limitations on measurements taken with the available machine and transducer. This problem might be overcome by using probes of lower frequency or equipment with higher quality image display at greater depth. The following parameters correlated significantly to body weight: VSTh-Es (r = 0.69; P less than 0.01). AoD-Es (r = 0.64; P less than 0.01) and CTA-Es (r = 0.84; P less than 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

M-mode echocardiography study in growing Spanish mastiffs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The growth of the heart in proportion to body-weight was studied by M-mode echocardiography in 66 Spanish mastiffs aged from one to 12 months and from two to four years. Measurements of the right and left ventricular cavities, septal and parietal wall thicknesses, aorta, left atrium, D-E excursion of the mitral valve and distance between the maximum aperture of the mitral valve and the interventricular septum, were shown to have a curvilinear increase closely related to the development of bodyweight. Least squares regression analysis of the logarithmically transformed data provided the power-law equations relating each echocardiographic measurement to bodyweight. The exponential powers of bodyweight varied from 0.22 to 0.45. From the direct measurements the following cardiac indices were determined: ratio of right/left ventricular cavity, shortening fraction, percentage of septal and parietal wall thickness and ratio of aorta/left atrium. The highest coefficient of determination was for the right ventricular/left ventricular ratio.  相似文献

Eighteen echocardiographic images useful for diagnostic imaging, M-mode echocardiography, and Doppler echocardiography of the equine heart were standardised by relating the position of the axial beam to various intracardiac landmarks. The transducer orientation required for each image was recorded in 14 adult horses by describing the degree of sector rotation and the orientation of the axial beam relative to the thorax. Repeatable images could be obtained within narrow limits of angulation and rotation for 14 of the 18 standardised images evaluated. Twenty-seven National Hunt horses were subsequently examined using this standardised technique. Selected cardiac dimensions were measured from two-dimensional and guided M-mode studies. Satisfactory results were achieved in 26 of the 27 horses. There was no linear correlation between any of the measured cardiac values and bodyweight. There was no significant difference between measurements taken from the left and the right hemithorax. Six horses were imaged on three consecutive days to assess the repeatability of the measurements. No significant difference was found between measurements obtained on different days. This study demonstrates a method for standardised echocardiographic evaluation of the equine heart that is repeatable, valuable for teaching techniques of equine echocardiography, applicable for diagnostic imaging and quantification of cardiac size, and useful for the evaluation of blood-flow patterns by Doppler ultrasound.  相似文献

Two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) and M-mode echocardiography were used to image the heart of 13 clinically healthy cats. Seven awake cats and six cats tranquilized with a combination of acetylpromazine and ketamine were studied. Six cats were studied by 2DE on 3 consecutive days to assess repeatability of the study. Long-axis and short-axis echocardiographic tomograms were obtained from the right parasternal location, and these images were used to determine internal cardiac dimensions, ventricular and septal wall thicknesses, repeatability of the study, and interobserver variability. Some but not all parameters were significantly (P < 0.05) related to body weight. Significant correlations (P <0.05) were found between measurements obtained by long-axis and by short-axis image planes. Comparison of parameters measured by 2DE and M-mode echocardiography demonstrated minimal differences between mean values. Repeatability of the 2DE study was good with 14 of 16 parameters having a mean percent error less than 10%. Interobserver variability was acceptable for some but not all parameters. The study indicates that repeatable 2DE tomograms can be obtained in the cat and that quantitation of cardiac anatomy is possible with this imaging technique.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterise the development of cardiac dilatation induced by chronic volume overload in 12 dogs. Bilateral arteriovenous fistulas were created between the common femoral arteries and the femoral veins, and the animals were serially studied with transthoracic echocardiography for a period of 12 weeks after the operation. Compared to the measurements obtained before the operation (week 0), the data obtained at the end of the experimental period showed significantly increased left ventricular volume measured by 2D-echocardiography (from 25.1 cm3 to 43.8 cm3, p < 0.0001 in diastole and from 8.6 cm3 to 16.8 cm3, p < 0.001 in systole), and left ventricular diameter measured by M-mode echocardiography (from 26.2 mm to 32.6 mm, p < 0.0001 in diastole and from 17.1 mm to 20.6 mm, p < 0.001 in systole). The size of the left atrium also increased in transversal (from 29.2 mm to 33.6 mm, p < 0.01) but not in longitudinal diameter. In spite of a significant cardiac chamber dilatation over the 12-week period, left ventricular systolic functional variables (fractional shortening, FS % and ejection fraction, EF %), and also the left ventricular systolic and diastolic free wall thickness remained unchanged. In this study we demonstrated that chronic progressive volume overload resulted in gradual dilatation of the canine heart, and that the pathological process can be monitored successfully by serial echocardiography. We found that left atrial dilatation occurred without the development of mitral regurgitation and/or detectable left ventricular dysfunction.  相似文献

M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 10 conscious, clinically normal dogs at various heart rates during atrial pacing. Heart rate was recorded as cycle length (seconds), and measurements were made only during sustained 1:1 atrial-to-ventricular conduction. In all dogs studied, there was a significant (P less than 0.01) positive correlation of left ventricular internal chamber dimension in diastole and systole to cycle length. Also, there was positive correlation between these left ventricular dimensions and the square root of cycle length, which predicted a plateau in dimensional changes as cycle length increased. Echocardiographic shortening fraction and left ventricular and septal wall thickness measurements did not change consistently during pacing. We concluded that left ventricular chamber dimensions in the dog may be significantly affected by alterations in heart rate.  相似文献

Donkey (Equus asinus), the cheapest form of agricultural power in Egypt, is used principally as draught or pack animals and may also be ridden, or used for threshing, raising water, milling, and other work. The aim of the present study was to provide B-mode and M-mode echocardiographic reference ranges from a sample of population of donkeys (E. asinus) based on the probability theory and statistics. In the present study, B-mode and 2-dimensional guided M-mode echocardiography were performed on 44 clinically healthy donkeys (E. asinus) (22 males and 22 females), without any neither clinical nor echocardiographic evidence of cardiovascular diseases, aged 2–25 year old, and weighed 150–350 kg. The echocardiographic dimensions, including interventricular septum thickness at end diastole, interventricular septum thickness at end systole, left ventricular internal diameter at end diastole, left ventricular internal diameter at end systole, left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end diastole, and left ventricular posterior wall thickness at end systole were assessed. The cardiac function indices, including end diastolic volume, end systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening were also measured. B-mode and guided M-mode echocardiographic examination of healthy donkeys revealed that both the interventricular septum thickness and the left ventricular posterior free wall were greater during systole than diastole. However, the left ventricular dimension during diastole was greater than systole. Furthermore, the recorded data of cardiac function indices, including end diastolic volume, end systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction, and fractional shortening using B-mode echocardiography were closer to those recorded by guided M-mode echocardiography. To our knowledge, this is the first Egyptian study to report the echocardiographic reference ranges of donkeys (E. asinus) based on the probability theory and statistics, the coefficient of variation. The results of the present study can be used as standard and reference values for further echocardiographic studies in donkeys and represent a step in the identification, interpretation, and evaluation of cardiovascular disorders in such animals.  相似文献

Echocardiographic evaluation of 23 horses with aortic insufficiency was performed, using M-mode (n = 23) and 2-dimensional real-time echocardiography (n = 14 of 23). Echocardiograms were evaluated for abnormalities of aortic and mitral valves and alterations in motion of these valves. Changes in left ventricular chamber size and function, as well as aortic root size, were evaluated. The presence of other cardiac disease was also evaluated. Horses with aortic insufficiency had significant increases (P less than 0.01) in mean values of left ventricular chamber size, aortic root diameter, and shortening fraction. Left ventricular free wall thickness also was significantly decreased (P less than 0.01). Valvular abnormalities were seen echocardiographically in all 23 horses. Eighteen horses with aortic insufficiency had thickened valves, whereas two horses had lesions associated with vegetative endocarditis. High-frequency vibrations of the septal leaflet of the mitral valve were noticed in all horses, whereas similar vibrations of the aortic valve were seen in six horses. The presence of a bounding arterial pulse correlated significantly (P less than 0.05) with increased left ventricular chamber size at end diastole and shortening fraction, indicating a marked left ventricular volume overload. A reliable diagnosis of aortic insufficiency can be made with the detection of bounding arterial pulses in concert with a holodiastolic decrescendo grade II to V/V murmur with maximal intensity over the aortic valve area, radiating toward the left cardiac apex.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to establish normal echocardiographic values of healthy Standardbred trotters not published previously. Twenty-three clinically normal horses weighing between 350 and 490 kg were examined in the same manner: first a thorough physical and then detailed echocardiographic examination were performed. Standardised two-dimensional (2D) and guided M-mode echocardiographic imaging techniques were used to measure interventricular septal thickness (IVS), left ventricular internal diameter (LVID), left ventricular wall thickness (LVW), left atrial internal diameter (LAID) in end-systole (s) and end-diastole (d) and aortic diameter (AOD) in end-diastole. Mean, range and standard deviation of the different parameters were calculated. The mean values (in centimetres) were as follow (2D/M-mode): IVSs: 4.6/4.7; IVSd: 3.1/3.0; LVIDs: 7.0/7.0; LVIDd: 10.7/10.7; LVWs: 3.9/3.9; LVWd: 2.7/2.7; LAIDs: 10.4/-; LAIDd: 11.3/-; AODd: 7.2/-. Results of two-dimensional and M-mode measurements were compared to each other and to normal values obtained from other breeds.  相似文献

Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 41 horses before they were successfully treated for atrial fibrillation. In addition, these examinations were performed in a subgroup of 20 horses after treatment, and the results were compared with pretreatment values. Atrial fibrillation in this group of horses was associated with a reduction of mean left ventricular fractional shortening (mean 31 %± 5.24%), and 22 of the 41 horses were below the reference range. The remaining mean M-mode variables were within the normal reference range, although 12 horses had increased left ventricular lumen dimensions in systole, and 8 horses had decreased left ventricular ejection times. Abnormal motion of the mitral valve was present in all horses and was characterized by the absence of A peaks, which were replaced by small diastolic undulations in 55% of the horses. In horses 1 to 20, after conversion to sinus rhythm, the mean fractional shortening increased (35.34%± 5.4%, P = .004), but there were no significant differences in heart rate or left ventricular lumen diameters in systole or diastole. These results suggest that ventricular function may be compromised by the presence of atrial fibrillation. However, this improved after correction of the arrhythmia.  相似文献

Twelve newborn pony foals underwent cardiovascular examinations (auscultation, arterial blood pressure measurements, electrocardiograms and M-mode echocardiograms) on their first day of life and then on Days 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90. An age dependent, statistically significant, rapid increase of the arterial blood pressure in the first month was documented together with a slower decrease of the resting heart rate after two and three months of life. Innocent soft systolic murmurs were audible over the left heart base in a large number of the foals. The electrocardiograms showed age dependent increases of the PR-, QRS- and QT- intervals and a trend of the mean electrical axis in the frontal plane to rotate towards the left side. The ventricular dimensions, measured by M-mode echocardiography, increased with the growth of the pony foals. Linear regression equations were calculated for the right and left ventricular internal dimensions in relation to body weight (bwt). The other echocardiographic parameter had low correlations with bwt.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether logarithmic and polynomial models are superior to simple linear models for predicting reference values for M-mode echocardiographic variables in dogs with a wide range of body weights. ANIMALS: 69 apparently healthy adult male and female dogs of various breeds, ages (range, 1 to 12 years; median, 3.5 years), and body weights (range, 3.9 to 977 kg; median, 25.4 kg). PROCEDURE: Echocardiographic M-mode measurements of the interventricular septum, left ventricular dimension (LVD), left ventricular wall, aorta, and left atrium were obtained. Simple linear, second-order polynomial, third-order polynomial, and logarithmic regression models were determined by use of the least-squares method to describe the relationship between M-mode measurements and body weight. Differences in adjusted R2 values of logarithmic and polynomial models were tested for significance of contribution, compared with the simple linear model. RESULTS: Significant differences in adjusted R2 were found when comparing simple linear with logarithmic or polynomial models for LVD-diastole, LVD-systole, aorta, and left atrium. Differences in adjusted R2 between second-order polynomial, third-order polynomial, and logarithmic models were not significant for any M-mode measurement. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In this study, logarithmic or second-order polynomial models predicted reference values of M-mode measurements for size of the cardiac chambers better than simple linear models for dogs with a wide range of body weights. Logarithmic and polynomial models were not superior to simple linear models for M-mode measurements of cardiac wall thickness.  相似文献
