Abstract:The soil salinization is the principal restraint of agricultural development in arid regions and also an important factor that affects the stability of oasis ecological environment. Therefore, the research on spatial variability of soil salts has been a hot spot in the field of geography. The Manas Rriver basin is a typical irrigated oasis agricultural region, harassed with an extensive problem of soil secondary salinization as a result of the effects of various factors. Therefore, management of soil salinization has become a major topic in the research on ecological environment of the region. Based on field investigations, spatial variability of soil salts in the surface the Manas River Basin was studied with the aid of GIS technology and Geostatistics theory. Results show that coefficient of the variation of soil salt content was from 77% in the 0 ~ 20 cm soil layer and 74% in the 20 ~ 40 cm soil layer, both being medium in variability. Kriging interpolation of soil salts shows that soil salts are mainly distributed in the central part and most of the northern part of the region, and relatively lower in the southern part of the irrigation zone.
